Overview:

The American attack on Aachen was to be their largest urban battle of the war. Blunt infantry assaults by G.I.s were causing wounds and deaths which decimated whole units on both sides. The first attacks worked slowly across the river Wurm, with building by building fighting decided by persistent, intense grenade battles. Tanks had so far been unable to cross the river to lend fire support. The Americans found that the Germans would counterattack swiftly before their lines could be consolidated, cutting of entire companies which were then whittled down. In such cases there was nothing to do but muscle their way through to them.
