Overview:
"The Return of the Beast..." -- On 10th June 1944, the columns of General Jesser battled to reduce defensive positions on Mont-Mouchet. This rugged and wooded area of the Central massif, best known through 18th century tales of “the Beast of Gevaudan”, was home to a group of Maquisards, hoping to receive support from the Allies. Jesser had recognized such threats and sought to eliminate this situation as soon as possible. The fighting on the 10th of June was apparently a failure for the attackers, and the next morning, Security Regiment 1000 tried again to resolutely advance towards Mont-Mouchet. They ran into two companies of Maquis holed up around a couple of farms, including that of Crepoux and a rocky ridge overlooking the area, crossed by the Gourguyre stream. The Germans hastily assembled their mortars and 20mm guns and pressed home their attack. The 10th and 14th Companies benefitted from thick stone walls, and had even dug trenches to defend themselves. Therefore, despite the presence of its anti-aircraft guns, the progress of the 1000th Security Regiment was slow. A group from the Corps Franc des Truands, returning from a sabotage mission, appeared in their rear, but the Germans reacted quickly.Attacker: German (I/1000th Security Regiment)
Defender: Partisan (Elements Corps Franc Laurent & Corps Franc des Truands)
