Overview:
In early August 1942, a light howitzer battery of the 36. Infanterie-Division (mot.) was besieged just northeast of Staroye Ustinovo. The German artillerymen, together with some motorcycle troops, were surrounded by infantry and half a dozen Russian tanks from the 20th Tank Brigade. The situation was a stalemate; the German force and its howitzers were powerful enough to keep the Russian tanks at bay, but lacked both gun tractors and offensive capability to break out. The 2. Panzer-Division had recently moved into the Karmanovo area. After a successful dive bombing attack by the Luftwaffe against the enemy staging area, the division had obtained some welcome replenishment in the form of four T-34s, which had been abandoned by their crews. The 8.
