Overview:
The Germans occupied Hungary and placed the Hungarian 1st Army under the control of Heeresgruppe Nordukraine. The Germans then coerced General Geza Lakatos to lead the 1st Army out of the Carpathian Mountains and into Galicia to draw Soviet forces away from the German-Romanian front near Jassy. As part of this operation, Brigadier General Bela Lengyel’s 16th Hungarian Infantry Division was to seize Ottynia. The 1st Assault Gun Battalion reinforced the Hungarian infantry.Attacker: Hungarian (Vannay)/Hungarian (Hungarian Royal Vannay Flying Squad Battalion and Assault Artillery Battalion)

2024-08-08 | (A) Simon Staniforth | vs | Ian Ainsworth | A | Hungarian (Vannay)/Hungarian win | No doubt I had the better of the DRs in this one. My opponent’s T-34s were only able to take out one of the Zrinyi’s despite a number of hits whereas I had a Shock and an Immobilised (both needing a 3) which ultimately led to the loss of both those T-34s. With plenty of Smoke potential the infantry were able to get cover as they approached the village with the Assault Guns / Mtr providing high FP fire support. The game ended appropriately enough with a 120mm CH on the Russian HMG position - with the Hungarian’s poised to capture the buildings needed for the win my opponent conceded | |
