Overview:
The Eltigen bridgehead, created after the landing of the Russian 318th Division south of Kerch on October 1943, earned the nickname of ‘Land of Fire’ after the 1.5 months of continuous bombardment by the besieging Germans and Romanians. The Romanian’s 6th Cavalry Division and 3rd Mountain Division were tasked with reducting the bridgehead. The assault was scheduled for 4 December and the Romanians were reinforced by one German StuG battalion and strong German artillery. The attack began at 5:00 after a five minute artillery barrage. Only the right wing of the Romanian forces managed to advance. On the left, the Soviets put up a heavy resistance, especially near the state farm and on Hill 56.7, where they had a pillbox. The next day, the attack continued with the main push made from west to east, towards the state farm and the lighthouse south of Eltigen.Attacker: German / Romanian (Romanian 10th Motorized Rosiori Regiment and German Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung.191)

| 2025-01-03 | (D) O Ramaille | vs | Pierre-Jean C | Russian win | A very interesting scenario with HUGE possibilities for both defender (how to setup and defend) and the attacker (where and how to attack). The Romanians attacked both the state farm and the lighthouse. The State farm was heavily defended with both the AT gun and the INF gun in support. A HIP Russian MMC with ATR in the bushes tried to provide some surprise to the attackers without much success however. The Romanians used OBA smoke intensively on the state-farm and DC to breach the fortifications. It was a long fight of attrition with only a Russian squad remaining who resisted 3 consecutive CC's led by the Romanian 10-2 leader (even at 3:1 odds). At the end, the Russian squad managed to escape the melee. The Russian tank was of little help as it decided to provoke a StugIII in a honorous duel fight which he lost miserably. In the lighthouse area, the Russians resisted and even managed to immoblize a StugIII. In the end, the Romanians rushed to the lighthouse for CC but the defenders managed to escape to the 1st level. with a successful ambush. With Russians still in control of a building in the state-farm and of the lighthouse in the last turn, the Romanians conceded. | ||

I only had enough resources for one other objective and choose the Lighthouse being closer. Last minute Russian heriocs KIA'ed everyone who made a run for the VC. The surviving StuG stunned, flamethrower broke, engineer eliminated placing the DC. This scenario is challenging for the Axis but not unattainable. I recommend this scenario. | ||

G took one VP area, but couldn’t get near the hills despite supporting that attack with two of the StuGs - one knocked out by my tank, the other in CC. That left the lighthouse, and I just did enough to fend him off there. Would definitely like to see this in a tournament for a long afternoon game. | ||
