German (SS)American
Overview:
The first elements of the American 30th Infantry Division to enter Mortain were met by civilians going about their daily lives. Some of the departing members of the 1st Infantry Division congratulated the new arrivals of their soft assignment. Not expecting their stay to be a long one, the battalions set up only hasty defenses. Operation LUTTICH, the German counteroffensive launched at Hitler’s direction to eliminate American gains made during COBRA, struck Mortain in the misty dawn of 7 August. The first sign of trouble was SS infantry in the streets of the town.Attacker: German (SS) (SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 3 "Deutschland," SS-Panzer-Division 2 "Das Reich")
Defender: American (1st and 2nd Battalions, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, and 823rd Tank Destroyer Battalion)

2024-04-26 | (D) Ian Morris | vs | Martin Mayers | American win | Pulled out a win on turn 6, when my last HIPs moved into CC with a smoke-shrouded Pz IV, ambushed it and burnt it with a ‘snakes’. By the end of the game nearly all the Americans were gone, with not many more SS left. Enjoyable, but a crazy scenario.
2021-09-15 | (A) Tim Wiegmann | vs | Mike Grogan | German (SS) win | After having several vehicles go up in flames on T1 during the assault of the board 11 hill, I decided to completely abandon the right flank and funnel all my AFVs over to the left flank and through the town center. This takes a long time, but minimizes exposure to the American anti-tank guns on the hill. The southern forces can just about clear Mortain by the time the first vehicles from the northern entry point reach the town, and the two forces can then combine to overwhelm the defenders covering the board 41 exits.
2013-07-23 | (D) Lee Bray | vs | American win | This was one of the most enjoyable and closest games I have played. Initially I thought my defence was about to crumple under the weight of the SS onslaught as units were overrun and isolated on my right flank. However my nest of AT guns in the board 11 woods proved a very tough nut to crack as they skulked and stayed hidden and covered the board exit on that side of the battlefield. Over the second half of the game, the fortunes of both sides see-sawed but the Us troops definitely had the best of the luck in the end. By the end of the game, the board 11 hill and was densely covered in burning vehicles and the exit road was clogged with them. Final victory went to the US when the Germans were narrowly prevented from exiting the VP they need - they got 38 - 2 short of the 40 they needed. Great game!
