2024-07-15 | (D) Douglas Leslie | vs | Marc Hanna | Gurkhas win | Had a blast playing this scenario. The Gurkha heavy weapons were unscathed during the initial Japanese attack but didn't contribute much in the battle that followed. In the end, it came down to an assault on one victory building which only one 648 survived long enough to enter CC against one and a half Japanese squads, both of which were pinned. It all came down to the final CC DR. The Gurkhas needed to kill the Japanese defenders in hand to hand combat at 1 to 1 odds and then survive a 1-4 attack in return. On this occasion, the dice gods were with me and I pulled of the win...just. Great scenario and it is easy to see why it has achieved "classic" status

2024-03-10 | (D) Vic Lauterbach | vs | JM | Japanese win | I got the Indian/Gurkha airborne in this one and set up to face an attack through the kunai around 42O2. I never found a good position for the MMOR but the ATG pounded 42oI3 and J1. Jim's first banzai went well for me as 2 mutual eliminations out of 3 melees allowed me to reoccupy 42J3 and 42oI3. Two costly Casualty MCs weakened my first counterattack to retake 50G10 and 42oG1 on Jim's right flank. It failed and left me with one GO 458 in 42F3. My last counterattack sparked a desperate HtH Melee in 42J1 that left Jim controlling the empty building. Overall, this one deserves its reputation as a classic. We both attacked and defended and were convinced our losses made our force too weak to win! Jim: Rough start for my "Furious" soldiers who took two CR results from 447 FF getting into position to Banzai, but that charge took the church. The heavy cost (2 MMC and my 8-1 in exchange for Vic's 8-0 and a 447) left me weak. Vic quickly knocked my 237 out of the church, so I hunkered down to hold 42G1 and J1. It came down to HtH CC mutual elimination in J1. What more could I ask? When the Japanese get to move around, they're fun to play! This very good scenario slightly favors the British; give the Japanese player the balance.
2023-06-27 | (D) Mark Thompson | vs | Chip Wertenberger (Japanese) | Gurkhas win | Intense brawl that included two successful Banzai Charges in turn 1 that resulted in Japanese Control of the church/required victory buildings and very bloody H-t-H CC lead by the Gurkhas that turned them out in turn 4. A critical (if only) contribution of the 76mm was an effective WP screen that allowed the Gurkhas to rapidly close and unleash devastating AFPh. A superhuman Japanese crew in the steeple made things interesting, but the Gurkhas' leadership and prowess in CC prevailed in every CC that followed. Fun scenario with many permutations possible for both sides. Highly recommended. |
