Overview:
Even with III Corps breaking the siege of Bastogne on the day after Christmas, there was still much fighting ahead. Patton wanted to use the city as the springboard for a counteroffensive, while Model now made it the central objective for “Wacht am Rhein”. The U.S. 26th “Yankee” Infantry Division was to hold the right flank while other formations made the breakthrough. General von Luettwitz made his move to pinch off the breakthrough at the same time by dispatching fresh reserves from the Fuhrere Grenadier Brigade, with both attacks meeting near the mountain village of Kaundorf.
