Overview:
The Belgian town of Nieuport was to anchor the east end of a perimeter to keep the Germans from Dunkirk for as long as possible. Belgian forces had been expected to contribute to the defense,, but King Leopold, without consulting the allies, surrendered to Germany on May 28. This left a vacuum which British and French force raced to fill. Two infantry regiments from the French 60e Division d’Infanterie were ordered to Nieuport but only one arrived. Shortly after the French arrived, a German reconnaissance unit seized the bridge into Nieuport and threatened to unhinge the entire Allied perimeter. A tense battle with the armored cars of the 13th Royal Lancers ensued and British Brigadier Clifton, in charge of the local defense, assembled a scratch force with some World War I-era 18 pounders to stiffen the line.Attacker: German (Aufklärungs-Abteilung 256, Infanterie-Division 256)
Defender: French / British (241e Régiment d'Infanterie / Royal Engineers, 2nd and 3rd Medium Regiments and 1st Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment)

2020-11-03 | (A) Gordon Jupp | vs | Andy Bagley | German win | Motorcycles roared up the left to threaten the back buildings while a steady advance across the rest of the front secured several buidings. On German T3 the attack stalled with a number of squads broken and the French line intact but it flipped in the French T3 when the defensive fire shattered the line allowing the Germans an easy advance in T4. We called it on T5 when it was clear that the necessary buildings were going to fall. Interesting scenario though.
2020-11-03 | (D) Andy Bagley | vs | Gordon Jupp | German win | Interesting scenario, but I'm baffled by the ROAR data that suggests the balance is pro-Allied. Have people found a defence that I missed, or have some people not realised that of the 8 buildings the Germans need, one starts in their control and two more should fall on turn 1? As it was, I tried a forward defence which looked OK to start with but collapsed on turn 3 before the British reinforcements could help. But the alternative would have been to fall back early, giving the Germans ample time to secure the buildings they need (even without destroying the British guns) because they can win without needing either of the 2-VP buildings near the northern board-edge. We thought o a few improvements after the game, but neither of us could figure out a really sound Allied defence.
2018-07-15 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Steve Etzelmueller | German win | Germans led with a sleaze freeze advance and quickly took the first set of buildings. They continued to bully forward, taking the next building along their northern path on Turn 2. An overheating of the French HMG certainly helped the cause. Turn 3 saw the Germans lose an AC to a bounding fire shot from a Morris, but the Brits lost one of their own in exchange. Meanwhile the Germans continued to push forward, taking another building. The next couple turns saw the Germans consolidate for pushes on the two additional buildings needed - W8 and Z3. The remaining British ACs both succumbed to the combined might of Germans small arms and AFVs. The Z3 building fell on Turn 5. Turn 6 saw the Germans jump off their assault on the last bastion of Ally hope. With all but one of their AFVs still in action and a host of infantry there was little doubt they would be successful, and the last turn saw them grab W8 as well as CC6. Overall not a very exciting scenario as slow and steady won the race. |
