Overview:
Always close enough to the battle to maintain his reputation as an action reporter, “Papa” Ernest Hemingway had become close friends with the commander of the 22nd Infantry Regiment, Colonel Charles Lanham. Lanham wanted to make sure Hemingway had something to write about without getting killed trying to find it. After personally leading a stalled attack against “Black Man” Ridge, Lanham and the 22nd would find the sharp end among the firs near Brandscheid, while his writer-friend sipped captured German cognac from a hilltop observation post.Attacker: American (22nd Regiment, 4th Infantry Division)
Defender: German (SS) (SS-Division 2 'Das Reich' and Kampfgruppe Kuehne)

2024-04-18 | (A) Jonathan Plott | vs | Steve B | American win | Warm up game before the main tournament at Bitter Ender in Raleigh, NC this weekend. Selected a broad front strategy with my (American) right flank a bit heavier. My opponent then had the worst run of dice I have ever seen. As my right advance pushed forward, he malf’d his HMG on the first shot of the game…and it went downhill from there. By sheer luck and bad German dice rolls, his flank crumbled on Turn 1, and one of my TDs ran through the sunken road and got into the German backfield after being briefly held up on some wire. The rest of the game turned into a slugfest with the Americans finding each and every wire/mine obstacle as they slowly pushed towards the objective. Had just enough firepower, flamethrowers and good luck to break the last significant reinforcements in the church. A real nailbiter that could have gone very differently but for that disastrous streak of boxcars on the German first turn. Great game Steve!

2023-09-12 | (A) Asad Rustum | vs | Kris Koch | American win | The Americans attack along the southern flank with a smaller force on the northern flank. The tanks supported in the middle with two squads. The Americans took some early breaks in the middle and the northern flank while the southern flank progressed well and was able to take out the hmg nest covering the sunken road. From turn three the American was extremely lucky and obliterated the German forces that had trouble getting any effective fire on the Americans. The German northern flank held quite well but had to withdraw to the church when the southern flank collapsed. At this point, with only two squads from Kampfgruppe Kuehne still standing, and a guaranteed large influx of Americans into the church, the Germans conceded the game. Really fun scenario.
2021-09-23 | (D) Rich Weiley | vs | Dave Wilson | German (SS) win | The SS hunkered down in the victory building and survived a heavy barrage from the tank destroyers. My opponent suffered heavy leader casualties which left him with no leaders by about turn 5. His final push for the victory building collapsed in the face of the flamethrower and a timely snakes on a 4 -1 advancing fire shot that eliminated a hero and one of the few remaining good order US squads. |
