Overview:
17" Indian Division captured Meiktila in early March as part of the offensive to regain Burma. The Japanese responded by launching a counterattack, and isolated the 17" Division from VI Corps. The 7" Indian Division attempted to keep the road open to Meiktila, but also had to contend with elements of the Indian National Army (INA) that was conducting guerilla operations on the lines of communication. Colonel Sahgel, commander of the 2nd Infantry Regiment (INA), was ordered to take up defensive positions in the Mount Popa region to prevent Allied forces from re-establishing contact with the 17th Division. Sahgel reached Popa at the end of March. The 9th Brigade, 5th Indian Division had been provided with vehicles to make them motorized, and they were ordered to attack to clear the route to Meiktila.Attacker: British (Indian) (9th Indian Brigade, 5th Indian Division)
