Overview:
General McArthur wanted to seize Biak because it provided a jumping off point for future operations against the Philippines. Only limited naval support was available for the operation. The planners incorrectly believed there were only 2,000 defenders on the island, and the 41st Infantry Division would make the landing. They landed on 27 May and eventually seized the Mokmer Airfield on 7 June. The Japanese launched a counterattack from their cave positions towards the airfield against elements of both the 162nd and 186th Infantry Regiments. The Japanese tanks, with a platoon of infantry near each tank, closed to within 250 yards of the American positions. . .Attacker: Japanese (Reinforced elements of 222nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division)
Defender: American (Elements of B Company, 1-162nd Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division)
