2022-04-24 | (D) Paul Legg | vs | Nick Ranson | | French win | | Nick though he had more time than he actually did. His forces were in quite good order but delayed too long in crossing the stream. |
2021-01-16 | (D) Andrew Young | vs | Derek Ritter | | French win | | Tight game, Derek played very well with putting pressure on my defenses. He used his panzers effectively as well but for one mistake. Came down to essentially a CC roll. French went over the the 24CVP and won. |
2020-10-31 | (D) Rob MacGinley | vs | Rodney Ding | | German win | | The Germans Sliced thru the French defence with little to slow them
Lots of bad rolls for the French in depth |
2020-08-11 | (A) Alberto González Ramírez | vs | Jake | | German win | | Very interesting scenario. Decided in the last turn. |
2020-07-10 | (D) Eric Topp | vs | Darryl Lundy | | French win | | A furious German attack met a stout French resistance east of the stream. With the aid of the tanks, the German infantry eventually grabbed three VC buildings and headed west. The French counterattacked with their 10-2 leader and knocked out one tank in CC but failed against a second. The German tank reversed out of the melee then charged back to OVR rolling a 2KIA. "Merde!" However, all was not lost. A long running melee ended in boxcars by the Germans allowing the French to withdraw and recapture a VC building. The Germans had run out of time... |
2020-03-27 | (D) Stephen dedier | vs | Holt, Jim | | German win | | French took out a couple German tanks but couldn't hold back the onslaught.
If I played again, I would take the 2nd AT gun and setup forward in 2nd story locations to try for more German casualties.
This time we played the newer version where the Germans get armor on the 2nd turn instead of 3rd and it makes a big difference (in my opinion). |

2018-07-06 | (A) Stephen dedier | vs | Johnston, Mike | | French win | | Really enjoyed this scenario. Mike took the force with the extra armored cars for the French. I pushed the German force in 2 prongs one down the road to the main town and a second across the foot bridge hoping to either pull enough French away to force the bridge in the main town or overcome enough to get the lone victory building on that board.
Went well for the Germans at first gaining a foothold across the river at the foot bridge and beginning the assault on the town when the armor reinforcements showed up. The German armor (and one CH ATR shot) were devastating to the French armored cars. However, the French AT gun and self inflicted wounds really hurt the Germans. Immobilized one tank to ESB going for 1 extra MP. I had another bog in the wooden victory building to hold it against the French and immobilize when trying to leave. The real damage was due to HOB. My Germans caused 5 HOB rolls on French morale checks. That generated 2 Hero's, and 2 Fanatic squads, one which came back from DM.
The AT gun got hot at the right time and took out one tank as it headed for an overrun and immobilized another.
In the end I took the 4 buildings in the main town and got to next to the units in the last building i needed but Mike volunatrily broke and routed upstairs denying my 2:1 CC possibility for victory. A few die rolling aonther way and the result might have been different. Fun scenario.

2017-11-04 | (A) X von Marwitz | vs | Peter Veenstra | | German win | | Peter wanted to play the Germans in this one, I preferred the French, so the stage was set quickly. The Germans attack with an infantry force which is reinforced by a strong force of tanks after a couple of turns. The objective of the Germans is to capture a number of multi-hex buildings. Most of them are located in a village on the near side of a stream (from German perspective) some others on the far side of it.
My plan for the French was to defend the near-side village in strength so as to force the Germans to commit their Schwerpunkt to attack it because they could not ignore it for the VC conditions. The hill plateau of board 59 would be swept by the French 10-2 directing the MMG and long range fire by another leader-directed French squad. This threat would make the Germans avoid moving across the hill but rather try to approach the village via the very southern flank. That area would bottle the Gemans up and make them lose time until their armor support arrived. The time lost in the early turns the Germans would miss in the end game to capture the last of the required buildings. In the center and on the northern flank, the French would position token forces to keep the Germans honest. These would either go down or fall back to the rearward victory buildings.
The plan worked out pretty well. As I had hoped, most Germans set up on the southern half of board 59 at ground level. The German 9-2 with a 468+dm HMG set up on the hill behind some woods. One stack of Germans set up in the southern part of board 42, apparently to attack through the center.
The southern Germans advanced through the grain to be struck by a FL of my LMG and a bit of infantry fire causing a bit of damage and pins. They tried to reach the patch of woods on the board-edge, which was covered by the French 60mm MTR and some infantry. The German 9-2 group was a bit audacious moving on the board 59 hill and was promptly killed and its accompanying squad broken and ELR'ed by the French MMG directed by the 10-2 in the first halfturn. This was of course a serious blow for the Germans. Subsequently, a further German HS carrying the 50mm MTR was also killed on the hill. In the attempt to do so, I used the French ATR, which promptly broke. Using it was a bad mistake, because I should not have exposed it before the advent of the German tanks and because it gave away which one of one of the three possible groups I selected to be included at setup in the French OoB: The one with 2x 248, the ATR and 12 Minefield factors. Luckily for me, this information glitch seemed to escape my opponent. In the center, my HS and a dummy danced around a bit to appear very much dummy-like, on the norther flank, my token force went unchallanged.
In German Turn 2, the Germans found out to their chagrin, that the woods and some grain on the southern edge of board 59 were infested with AP mines which restricted infantry movement to very unfavorable open terrain or forced a detour over the hill which was still covered by the French 10-2 and 458+MMG menace. One of the French AMR 33s was also present, posing as an obstacle impervious to small arms fire. The 60mm MTR opened up on the Germans in the Woods hoping for Air Burst hits but unfortunately missed. The German advance was firmly stalled on the southern flank. In the center, the German stack believed my units to be all dummies and crossed the road offering my HS a 2-2 fire-opportunity. Alas, I gacked that roll and the Germans all safely arrived in the stone building on the other side of the road. The French redeployed a bit and a Shocked AMR 35 in the south recovered to successfully pull back in non-platoon movement out of LOS of the German ATR further plugging the open road at the southern edge of board 59. The French northern flank began falling back to the rearward victory buildings.
German Turn 3 saw their infantry cheeringly welcome the badly needed armored reinforcements. He moved them quite agressively across the board 59 hill and through one of the AP-Minefields creating a TB and with it a way for a German squad to exit it without attack and a possibility for the bottled up Germans in the woods for a detour to avoid the open road. And we had one of those memorable deeds of our cardboard-warriors that make ASL such a great game and which I will relate here:
A German Pz38(t)A rushed forward across the board 59 hill and closed in to freeze a French AMR 33 and a French 457+LMG in a stone building. For the purpose, it even ESB'ed and immobilized. Bound by target selection limits, I turned the turret of my AMR 33 and kept ROF. The second shot of its CMG armament destroyed the Pz 38(t)A and the crew survived and bailed out onto the CAFP hazardously moving. With nothing else to do, my 457+LMG fired 18-1 at the crew, which it miraculously survived unscathed along with other fire from outside the hex. Other German units closed in from outside. Having survived the MPh, the Crew was now placed IN the Stone Building and the Location marked with CC. In the CCPh, combat being sequential, the German tank crew attacked my tank, rolled snakes to kill it and to generate a 8-1 leader. Talk about candidates for an Eisernes Kreuz here.
While the arrival of the German tanks significantly raised the pressure on the French, they were also getting into the sights of the yet HIP French ATG and the French were still firmly lodged in the village. No building had been captured by the Germans yet. Because my opponent was having a bad cold menacing him and feeling sick, he conceded at that point. It was just as well for me as the previous night had been a short one. So a French win for me. |
2017-09-30 | (A) X von Marwitz | vs | Alex Koestler | | German win | | Played this as the German. There was a French Balance in effect exchanging 2x 458 by 2x 457 and removing 4x"?" from the original French OoB, as this is generally considered to be a pro French scenario.
I had one important ally, though, and this was lady luck, who caressed me in all my ventures and kicked my opponent to even out...
First, I did not elect to set up as my opponent intended so I could avoid some bad things he had in mind for me. Then, I managed to roll snakes with my killer stack vs. his 10-2 & company. On top, my HMG & MMG kept ROF twice. This broke his 10-2 and killed 2 French squads. Of course, this helped the German cause greatly. Then, my Panzers seemed to be lavishly equipped with sD ammo, which shrouded my advance due to drift for a French half-turn so splendidly, that he could not even see some of my units. Not a single gacked usage DR despite being BU. Though I was surprised by French mines, my Germans managed to reach the eastern village in strength by turn 3. After AFPh of German T4, the French had lost 3.5 squads, the 8-1, both AMR 33's, the LMG the 25LL ATG, and I had captured the MMG. Another HS was due to die for FTR, the AMG was threatened by 2 Pz38 and an ATR and the French MTR HS had a squad and a CX HS ready to move into CC. The way to the western village was blocked by the German killer stack, two tanks were west of the stream and the Germans had only suffered 3CVP so far. At that point, my opponent conceded.
I believe this scenario is easier to win as the French but more fun to play as the German. I could have been in serious trouble even with the French balance, but this time, just everything [EXC: Minefield surprise] worked out for the Germans. |

2015-07-03 | (D) nathan wegener | vs | Daniel S | | French win | | Good combined arms scenario. Opponent had a solid attack plan and moved through the village. Frenchies did well each unit doing their part delaying and attriting before sucombing to the German assault. Won on CVP killing 4 AFV, sniper nailing the 9-2 and a couple of squaddies. |
2015-01-22 | (A) Gordon Jupp | vs | Nick Holmshaw | | German win | | Another playing of this for me, but first time as the Germans. It ended up being a tight game as Nick had postioned his ATG close to the final building I needed and took out a couple of tanks, pushing me close to the CVP cap. He was very unlucky with one flank shot which only shocked the crew - who recovered in the next Rph to prevent the CVP loss! |

2014-11-10 | (A) Bill Brodie | vs | Steven Bond | | German win | | Won as the Germans after pushing hard through the village with some tough close combats, where I lost my 9-2 and Steve lost his 10-2. His AT gun took out two tanks and a Pz II broke down through ESB. Steve lost both armoured cars and both tankettes. Steve had a chance to win by CVP in his last CC phase, but failed to take out two tanks in CC. Close and fun game with several options for both sides. |

2013-10-23 | (D) Gordon Jupp | vs | Jason Johns | | French win | | Back to something more familiar after the foray into PTO last time...found this to be a really interesting scenario. Jason attacked hard through the village but I won ambushes on 3 occasions and pulled out of CC forcing him to come after my defenders again. The delay proved too much..... |
2013-03-09 | (A) John Van Natta | vs | Jeff T. | | French win | | |
2013-03-09 | (D) Jeff T | vs | JVan | | French win | | This is an early war special, in Belgium in 1940 with Rommel running some Panzers in to break through a French defense. The Germans must take 5 of 7 multi-hex buildings. The main map feature is a river (including stream overlay St1) to bottle neck the German armor at two bridge crossings. 4 of the 7 buildings are on the East side of the river and accessible. The other 3 are across the bridges.
The French get a mixed OB choice between a 2nd 25LL AT Gun, a 25LL armored car, or 2 elite 2-4-8 HS with an ATR and 12 factors of mines.
I took the mines and converted 6 AP mines into 2 AT mines to mine the northern bridge and hopefully protect my flank. JVan split his entry forces with several squads going north to take the trails through the woods to the north side victory building. He put his 9-2 leader and the HMG up on level 1 to try to be a kill stack and interdict the French at level 1 in several buildings. This would prove costly as the German fire was ineffective (after assembling the HMG) and on turn 2, the whole stack broke taking return fire from the French MMG directed by a 10-2 leader upstairs in a victory building across the river. This set back really put JVan behind his timetable.
Initially, the Germans couldn't pass a morale check as a HS on the foot bridge broke a squad trying to bump his concealment (before dying in CC) and in the south a couple of HS recon units fell to fire. On turn 3 the Panzers arrive and immediately pushed into the orchards adjacent to the victory buildings in a big push. Thus began the major part of the battle as both sides attacked and moved to try to get the advantage. The French skulked and took select shots, frequently with good effect. JVan's initial combined arms attack was off as his infantry pushed ahead of the vehicles on turn 3, but from there on, it was very nicely executed as the French were quickly being pushed back further and further, trying desperately to hold on to any concealment they could.
The game changed when JVan drove his two 20L PzIIs behind the victory buildings close to the river bend. My French had an AT gun next to the river in the brush and I let the first one go and stop (showing his rear) before firing on the 2nd one that moved within point blank range showing it's side. I got ROF and after a dud first shell, the 2nd hit was a critical that destroyed the first Panzer. I turned the gun to engage the 2nd PzII but missed. I wouldn't miss again as it died in French turn 5 prep fire and suddenly the French were grabbing CVP to threaten the German victory. I had casualty reduced a few German squads to push me up near 16 CVP. The cap was 24.
On German turn 6, John had to get more aggressive and drove one of his 37L in sight of the AT gun as it needed to assault the wooden victory building (#4) near the south bridge. The AT gun missed. JVan then drove another one over the hedge and offered a side shot. I intensive fired the AT gun and scored a hit. The TK roll was low, and so the AT crew bagged another Panzer.
John was forced to get more aggressive in the North since it didn't seem likely he could get across the south bridge and take on the French 10-2 with MMG and another concealed squad covering that bridge. He pushed on the south victory building and I had moved over a mortar crew and the 25LL armored car. In the end game, I was able to get a shot off from upstairs on a stack of Germans double-timing in the road and killed the leader. Then I did an overrun with the armored car and broke two squads in the woods with the mortar. The day ended for the Germans as a squad moved into the MMG bore sighted hex and a 4 down 1 shot resulted in a KIA which put the Germans at the 24 CVP cap and gave the win to the French.
I'd say this one favors the French slightly but it still quite enjoyable and can be won by the Germans. Very cool early war offering with options for the defender in the variable OB choice as well as a plethora of choices for the setup and lots of ground to cover. I really enjoyed this one. |
