Overview:
The issue in Greece was no longer in doubt; the last units of the Greek Army had surrendered the day before. W Force was attempting to withdraw to evacuation points along the south coast of Greece. This greatly increased the importance of the narrow isthmus at Corinth with its lone bridge spanning the Corinth Canal. Although wired for demolition, the bridge commander was reluctant to destroy the bridge and thus doom the Allied units still fighting in the north near Marathon. At 7 AM, Stukas and fighters attacked the bridge area knocking out most of the anti-aircraft defenses. Soon afterwards the silent approach of parachutes and gliders announced the start of the battle for the Corinth Bridge.Attacker: German (Bataillone I & 2, Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 2, Flieger Division 7/Panzer-Division 9)

2024-08-04 | (D) Shane Pask | vs | German win | Obviously designed to practice air assets but Disappointing in play - Allies conceded turn 4 when a 2 down 2 killed the squad trying to set the DC on the bridge and only the HMG was left resisting north of the bridge where the vast majority of the Germans were (and 2 AT but what good is 40 AP vs hordes of infantry?). Nothing went right for the Allies - they even lost a 4:1 CC. I would still consider a replay, however, as I remember enjoying playing the SL version years ago. My defense set up could improve and dice were against me.
2020-04-12 | (D) Rich Weiley | vs | Dave Wallace | German win | Did not enjoy this at all. Absolutely smashed. Germans got an excellent initial landing and took no casualties. Any attempt to redeploy the defence was countered by the Stukas which were very effective. Conceded before the armour reinforcements entered after establishing a new Personal Best for the number of units to surrender in a single rout phase.

2014-11-10 | (A) Lee Bray | vs | German win | Quite strongly pro-German I felt. I planned my drop on both sides of the bridge and all but one came down where I wanted. The dispersed nature of the defenders' setup meant drop casualties were pretty light too. As a result I could grind forward to the north end of the bridge while a more intense battle on the southern side resulted in a stalemate but stopped the Commonwealth interfering too much with what was going on on the bridge. In the end Commonwealth conceded a couple of turns early. The air support proved very handy especially against the Commonwealth armour although heavy AA was very effective, shooting down 2 stukas! |
