Overview:

After two years of skillfully destroying clumsy attacks, Army group North was forced to fall back to prepared defenses in the winter of 1943/44. By controlling the road net and withdrawing in leaps, the Germans were able to reform the line on the Narva River, which ran through the city of Narva. The Russians, frustrated after so many attempts to cut off and destroy the Army Group, had already crossed the river to the south of the city, but because of the terrain, were having difficulties expanding the bridgehead. Frontal attack to pin German forces down in the city were ordered. Here, SS infantry and fire brigades of tanks met them.
