After the Japanese
had invaded and secured a large portion of Shanghai, the Chinese launched
their only effective counterattack of the campaign. Unable to capture fortified
Japanese positions in the heart of the city, the Chinese 87th Div. skillfully infiltrated
around the strongpoints and set fire to whole city blocks at Yangshupu,
burning gaps in the lines wide enough to feed the 37th Div. through. General
Zhang Zhizhong’s plan was to push the Japanese into the Huangpu River
and then blockade the coast and deny the enemy any chance to land reinforcements
at the Hueishan docks.

An attempt was made at bursting through the Japanese lines, but the defenders managed to survive most attacks and few cracks appeared for the Chinese to flow through. The Chinese HMG never got to shoot, the Japanese INF gun went on multiple crazy tears that ruined many squads, the Chinese sniper was asleep on 6 tries and a blunder or two via LOS, coupled with lucky defensive shots made it impossible for the Chinese to progress. CC actions took their pound of flesh as well, even if the Chinese were holding their own. Probably worth playing with the Chinese balance.
