The Australian advance in Buin had been checked south of the Puriata River, forcing the lead elements to consolidate on a feature known as Slater's Knoll. The 25th Battalion was told to entrench and await relief by the balance of the 7th Brigade. The Japanese followed up their modest success with plans for an attack by the remnants of two regiments against the Australian position.
