German (SS)British
Overview:
The British perimeter outside the city of Arnhem was steadily shrinking. Four days after dropping north of the Rhine, the paratroops and glidermen of the 1st Airbourne Division were running critically short of supplies and men. The Germans were massing their forces, and it seemed that they would crush the perimeter before 30 Corps, the ground portion of the market-Garden offensive, could reach them. With nowhere to go, the airborne troops did what they had been trained to do, defend the airhead. . . . A small group of British infantry, with two anti-tank guns, must hold off a German force supported by three armored assault guns. All of the British units may use hidden setup, so the German player will see nothing but a empty map as he begins his attack.Attacker: German (SS) (SS-Kampfgruppe Harder)

2024-02-26 | (A) Justin DiSabatino | vs | A | German (SS) win | The initial British HIP set-up really makes the German choose a measured approach, particularly if you want your AFVs to stay around. The British established a broad line with an AT gun at either flank to handle a German push in either direction. T1 had the German infantry probing forward with the StuGs coming on slowly, letting the infantry find the British troops. On T3, when the southern AT gun took out one of the StuGs, but the German attack shifted south to focus all efforts on eliminating the gun and punching a hole. Over T4 and T5, the British scrambled to adjust to the southern attack while the Germans used their infantry to take out the gun crew and tie up the PIAT in CC. This let the Germans run 18 EVP off the board on T6 for the win. The HIP SSR helps the British in the initial contact, but the placement of the two AT guns really impacts the scenario. The northern British gun had great LOS across the northern approach but could not easily shift to provide any support for the south, allowing the Germans to take the win.
2024-01-13 | (D) Louis Langdeau | vs | Wesley G | A | British win | Wes had a good plan. He smashed a tank through my line and left it in motion on T1, with the other two hanging back. When I revealed an AT gun and skunked the shot, he then peeled the first tank through, and channeled the others down the same area. By T2 he had moved two tanks off, and had a third sitting on top of the hill behind my AT gun, which malfed. I got an ungodly lucky shot on my T2, repairing the AT gun, spinning on a dime, and plunking a round right into the the StuH42 behind me, lighting it up and killing the crew. At that point Wes was sitting on 14 points, with all his infantry around mid map. He pushed forward, and the rest of my troops revealed, breaking a lot of his squads. The end of the game came down to two fantastically lucky pins on a squad and leader about to run off the board, followed by my back AT gun going on a horrific ROF HE tear, breaking the remaining squads. He made a last ditch push with an 8-1 and half squad, but they couldn't get through the remaining fire. The game was fun, but this scenario is only okay. It feels like there's not actually that many options on where to put the AT guns if you want them to be HIP. It also feels like a lot of the game does break down to whether you can rush the AFVs off of not. I do think you could increase the German chances by moving a bit slower and using the tanks to break a hole, but there's not much time to work. Either way, probably not one I'll be playing again, though it was a really good intro to AFVs. |

2023-07-11 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Gary Olson | German (SS) win | Gary had a good defence, but was betrayed by a malfunctioning 6 pounder that allowed free passage for the 3 AFVs. And I was able to take out his PIAT in close combat.

2022-12-01 | (D) Craig Renier | vs | Bob W | British win | The German attacked was focused on the north flank. A risky move of 2 MMCs with a leader in open ground gave the British an opening. The first British unit revealed itself but had no effect. A 2nd British unit could not resist the opportunity, revealed itself, and broke the entire stack. This stack would not rally for 1 1/2 turns, delaying the German advance. The Germans eventually were able to cross the road in the center, but two AFVs were wrecked by a British ATG. The remaining units were too far from the exit side to make it off the board and the game was called on Turn 4.

2022-04-03 | (D) Jonathan Plott | vs | Bill Ryder | British win | Played this against another relative newbie at the most excellent Where the Iron Crosses Grow Tournament this past weekend. The game was a very near run thing with Bill getting two of his Stugs and an officer SMC off the edge of the map for 15 VPs...but a last-second Pin of the one squad that was in a position to make it off the board secured the British win. 17 VPs needed for a SS victory and got 15. As the British, playing with your entire force HIP while FTF was a new experience for me (had been playing VASL exclusively for the past two years for obvious reasons). Thank heaven for iPhone cameras! Great game Bill!
2021-11-27 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Gary Olson | British win
2021-09-06 | (A) Jonathan Plott | vs | Stephen Stewart | British win | Best laid plans...yadda yadda yadda. Entire force was going along the southern (lower) edges of the board. Attempted to push my infantry forward to screen the advance of my AFV's. Had to get at least two of them off the board to have even a chance of victory. For 2 turns, was doing well (I thought) until the T3 MPh and Stew's impeccably placed 6-pounders opened up on my moving StuGs and killed them all. Brit victory in two and half turns. I learned a lot...thanks for the game, Stew!

2021-08-22 | (D) César Moreno | vs | Mark Thompson | British win
2021-04-12 | (A) Chris Anthony | vs | Craig Renier | British win (VASL Log) | A very well placed defense. The German northern arm was quickly reduced to a HS and wreck of the StuG. The main German force pushed up to the orchard road in the middle of town, but was thwarted when trying to cross. After a delay to rally most of the squads, the Germans were able to make it to the base of the two hills. Again the push stalled, but victory was still possible, if not likely. A dash to the exit failed when the first StuG was smoked by the last AT gun.
2021-04-11 | (D) Craig Renier | vs | Chris Anthony | British win | Despite losing a full squad to a CH shot from one StuH early, the British defense held its own, bolstered by eliminating one StuG with an AT gun on Turn 2. The German advance was deliberate leaving the British with few options for defensive fire, but the defense kept the advance from gaining too much ground. The British defense was also helped by below average IFT rolls followed by above average German MCs. On the final turn the German made a final push needing to use the road beneath both hills in order to reach the board edge. The second British AT gun had remained HIP and finally revealed adjacent to a moving AFV and successfully destroyed it.
2021-02-05 | (D) O Ramaille | vs | Gerard Vandervelden | British win | The German entered the city and soon suffered some fire from a hidden British unit when some troops crossed an orchard road. The Stugs moved North but Johnny and his men suddenly jumped out from a house and destroyed on of them in CC. The British defended with ferocity preventing the Germans to move forward. Dave and his men first destroyed a halfsquad using their PIAT then moved in CC killing a German squad and its leader. The last two Panzers tried to escape but met the efficient fire from the AT gun. A full British victory.
2021-01-14 | (D) Jonathan Townsend | vs | Alberto | British win
2020-12-18 | (D) Craig Renier | vs | Richard Vierra | German (SS) win | The Germans directed their attack on the south side of the field, slowly advancing with infantry scouting for the British guns. One British squad positioned near the board edge was able to reduce the first squad to enter, but the remaining German force entered unscathed. At Turn 3 the Germans had advanced across half the board and entered into CC against the British MMC with the PIAT. The first British gun was set up on the North side with LOS down the road and had only 1 MF in LOS down the road when firing at the German tanks. The TH was lowered even more with the aide of a MMC laid smoke. Even though the Germans took heavy losses in CC, the British MMC and SMC were tied up in CC long enough for the German tanks to progress up the hill on the South side and move carefully towards West edge. On the last turn, the British had a faint hope, having won CC, by maneuvering the PIAT within striking distance and sending a HS into CC against a tank. But with the 2nd British gun emplaced in the brush on the North side, there was little hope of keeping at least two tanks from exiting. When the PIAT broke and CC failed, the Germans quickly exited the three tanks for a Victory.
2020-09-30 | (D) Ken Rutkowski | vs | George H | British win | This was interesting. I thought I hid my guns pretty good. I rolled 10 on 5 of 6 TH rolls. The one that was successful couldn't even stun the German afv. Game came down to the last DF First Fire die roll. I had a 4ift with a -3 drm and rolled a 3 to prevent the German from exiting that last needed VP's. He had 16 of the 17 needed.
2020-08-16 | (D) Vilis Pavulans | vs | Jakob Gruvaeus | British win | No fair game with my opponent trying to learn AFVs and getting the difficult side and the balance wasn´t enough. It was a close game though and came down to the last defensive fire with a 57gun firing AP ammo and managing to break the one squad that was needed for german victory.
2020-05-09 | (D) Derek Dunn | vs | Bruce Carson | British win | Good scenario to work through AT Guns and Tanks.
2020-05-03 | (D) Derek Dunn | vs | Kevin Sanders | British win | Germans came in solid, but got held up and ran out of time. Good scenario.
2020-05-03 | (A) Kevin Sanders | vs | British win | Went to the last roll. Lost the winning tank to a AT gun. Solid Brit defense stopped 2 winning squads as well. Hard and have to move.

2018-07-12 | (D) Ilyas Jalisi | vs | Anonymous | German (SS) win | This was a rematch. He was more cautious with his tanks this time and carved a path through my flank, rushing through for the win.
2018-07-10 | (D) Ilyas Jalisi | vs | Anonymous | British win | Played against housemate; I was the Paras and he played the Germans. Lit up two of his three Stugs on the second turn (thank you ROF), and then the third on following turn. He conceded after that.
2018-06-29 | (D) Scott Sherer | vs | D. Bruce Weston | British win | Switched sides and moved up to full ASL vehicle rules. Added a Sherman for the Brits and a Panther (I think) for the Germans. Still didn't matter as I won pretty handily as the Brits. My opponent has picked up the basics of vehicles pretty quickly so on to bigger and better scenarios.
2018-06-28 | (A) Scott Sherer | vs | D. Bruce Weston | British win | First game for my opponent using AFVs and he thoroughly trounced me! Did not exit a single VP off the board. Good learning scenario for AFVs, but seems to be fairly pro-British.
2018-06-22 | (A) Kermit Mullins | vs | Scott Waites | British win
2017-11-12 | (D) Seumas Hoskins | vs | Dean | German (SS) win | Game ended very quickly due to British using a more forward placement and on the opening shot for the firelane that would protect the guns a boxcar roll followed by a SFF boxcar roll, then yet another on FPF. The Germans very quickly overran the remaining British due to the reliance on the opening firelane.

2014-07-18 | (A) Lee Hyde | vs | Steve Ambruzs | German (SS) win | Tough with HIP British and 2 high Rate AT Guns, but flank rush busted through AT cover with a lucky shot breaking crew and Leader at first time of asking. Lost one tank, but revealed the AT Gun for infantry to neutralise. Only managed to get everyone off in last Axis turn.

2013-05-03 | (A) O Ramaille | vs | British win | A very difficult walk for the germans in Oosterbeek. The british slowed them and destroyed one StugIII. Only on reached the west side. A complete British victory.
2013-04-01 | (A) Dmitry Klyuykov | vs | Anna Aleksanyan | German (SS) win | Tanks cleared buildings one-by-one when infantry aggroed some britishes.
2013-02-18 | (A) Mark Purkeypile | vs | L.H. | British win | Playing the Germans, made a flanking rush to exit the board on around one hill. An extremely lucky shot in the AFPh by a 6 pdr brought down my StuH 42. Altogether, a poorly designed scenario. All units must be stacked with leaders using full road movement for three full rounds directly through the middle of the town to exit anything. Not really doable.
2013-02-01 | (D) Marc Guénette | vs | Sam Harper | British win | Fun and tense game. The Germans got the bulk of the KIAs. Two tanks out. The hidden placement is very powerfull as I waited imminent contact to hose him.
