Overview:
After the collapse of Soviet forces facing Army Group Center, a handful of Russian units were sent to defend the main communications routes to Moscow -- the most critical of which was the Minsk highway which ran south of Borodino. Meanwhile, the 10th Panzer Division regrouped and followed up its main thrust towards Moscow, following the SS "Das Reich" Motorized Division. On 13 October, German forward elements encountered the first Soviet defensive positions near the town of Yelnya where a small stream had to be crossed in order to keep up the pace of the advance. ---- A combined arms attack by the Germans across a stream. The Germans get two options, go for the village or go for exit CVP. The Russians cannot cover everything. Lots of options for both sides.Attacker: German (SS) (II Battalion Panzergrenadier Regiment Germania, 2nd SS Motorized Division and Panzer Regiment 7, 10th Panzer Division, Aufklärungs Abt.)
Defender: Russian (32nd Rifle Division/Reserve Company)

2023-11-16 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Edgar Degiovanni | German (SS) win | The German plan was to assault across the bridge to take the village with a small flanking force crossing the stream to the east and advancing through the woods. The Russian sniper was very active forcing an armored car to recall and breaking two squads. Another Russian squad turned an AFV into a burning wreck with CC Reaction Fire. But the Germans were able to persist inflicting losses on the Russians. Russian forces on the east side were late to move giving the Germans a small opening to force most of the buildings. On the final 1/2 turn, the Germans fired into a Melee breaking the two Russian squads while suffering no losses themselves. With German units in a position to advance into the final building and no Russian units able to prevent it, the Russians conceded. | ||

2022-02-17 | (A) Andy Bagley | vs | Ernst Knauth | Russian win | I had a plan: I guessed (correctly) that the Russians would set up their ART Gun on the western hill, so brought my tanks on out of its LOS to provide long-range fire support, whilst the armoured cars just hid until it was time to button up and dash down the road to exit. Meanwhile, the main infantry force would move through the woods and gully west of the road to attack the Gun, while a smaller force (two squads and a leader) moved towards the village to hinder any defensive shift west. This worked up to a point; the two armoured cars managed to survive many defensive shots and exit successfully, and the main infantry force reached the Gun on the hill. However, I ran into two major problems: first, the Russian 50mm mortar opened fire on my smaller force, with IFT 2 -1 shots and got RoF 12 (yes, TWELVE!) times. Not surprisingly, this wiped my guys out. Then on turn 3, I had a 6:1 CC attack with 0 modifiers against the Gun crew - and failed (rolled an 11)! The Russians fired into the resulting melee, then fed it with more troops, with the result that this melee continued right up to the end of the game, with many German units breaking and withdrawing from it. In the end I might have got a third AFV off, but could not exit any infantry as the Russian reinforcements blocked my few remaining units. So, a Russian win. It was close though, and a few more favourable DRs might have done it for me, but it was a really enjoyable scenario and well played by my opponent. |
