Overview:

"The Broken Arrow" -- Launched on 16th December, the Ardennes offensive took the Americans completely by surprise, and in the area of the 5th Panzer Army, the Germans seemed able to reach the Meuse. However, the fierce resistance of GIs, the arrival of Allied units as reinforcements and huge logistical problems compromised the German’s chance of success. On 22nd December, General Von Lauchert, commander of the 2nd Panzer Division, launched its reconnaissance battalion towards Dinant. On the Meuse, the troops of the British 29th Armoured Brigade were ready and waiting. In addition, from the north, the US 2nd Armored Division, the famous “Hell On Wheels” entrenched itself around the villages of Foy and Conneux, where they underwent intensive shelling from artillery and air strikes. On 25th December, with the forward German units having received no gasoline or resupply, the Allies simply passed over to the attack…
