Overview:
The Soviet offensive began on 24 November 1942 as expected without immediately revealing its points of main effort, however. Instead, the Soviets applied pressure all along the German Ninth Army's front, hoping to find the weakest spots in the German main line of resistance. These were revealed in the afternoon, when alarming reports of significant breakthroughs came in from the area south of Bely, in the Luchesa Valley. The result of the large number of reports coming in from all sectors of the XXIII Army Corps was the hasty alerting of the Infantry Division Grossdeutschland and an order to send individual Kampfgruppe as Fire Brigades to the threatened points...Attacker: Russian (185th Tank Division)

There is a single bridge, which the tanks will most certainly have to use, or else run a high risk of crashing through the ice. The Russians receive a pre-game bombardment, and I was most worried about them using it to sweep away one side of my meager defensive force, but they used it to sweep the hills instead. This worked out in the sense that they exposed my HIP mortar, and thus knew which direction it was facing. So they sent about 3/4 of their infantry from the north, while the remainder tried to cross the bridge with a few tanks. I made a bridge crossing as difficult as I could, with a bore-sighted hex for my mortar, HMG#1, and HMG#2 in the first three hexes the Russians would use to enter it. Needless to say, the infantry got ripped to shreds, and I managed to flame one tank and shock the other. I had thought the falling snow would hurt my shots, but since I mostly used FLs it really didn't. In fact it allowed my men much more latitude to reposition themselves safely. The Germans get four random reinforcement groups, and my first group was my three AT guns. I was fairly happy with this, as it allowed me some time to get them up into the hills to try and cover the bridge with more guns. Turn 2 saw the Russians start to crest the river's edge on my side of the board in the north. Thankfully I received my largest infantry reinforcements that turn, allowing me to bolster the defense there. No surprise, he captured and MALFed one of my original crisscrossing AT guns, which really wasn't a big deal as it had run out of APCR (and was thus almost useless). Turn 3 saw him adjust his attack more centrally, which came back to bite him in the butt when one of my squads was able to reman my northern HMG. I managed to shock another tank. Turn 4 saw a bunch more Russian reinforcements arrive. The infantry decided to come in from the south since my mortar had swung around to cover the north, while the tanks had little choice but to cross the bridge (which was now blocked by one of my HTs, a flaming wreck, and his shocked - soon to be CK - tank). His infantry in the middle of the board were again severely rebuffed, and he decided to call it a day as it would take his tanks a long time to cross that bridge (still at risk from two of my AT guns with possible APCR). |
