Overview:

Control of the vital road bridge across the Aller north of Essel would allow the armored regiments of the 11th to break out across the north German plain. Acting swiftly, Brigadier Mills-Roberts formulated a plan which called for the capture of a railroad bridge one mile downstream from the intended target. From positions across the river, the Commandos would than take the road bridge from behind with out having to face the Germans in a frontal assault. Before nightfall on the 10th, Mills-Roberts moved 3 Commando into position and put the plan into operation shortly after dark.
