Overview:
Two British attempts to take Caen had each resulted in an embarrassing defeat with horrific losses. The third attempt would be made on 10 July with a head-on assault into the city and a flanking attempt through Hill 112. The 129th Brigade (43rd Wessex Division) was responsible for the capture of Hill 112 then the 214th Brigade would push east across the Orne River and behind Caen itself. Two battalions (the 4th and 5th Wiltshire) would attack the Hill from the east and west, respectively, as the 4th Somerset Light Infantry (SLI) attacked the summit from the center. The 5th Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (DCLI) was held in reserve to be pushed down the southeastern slopes of Hill 112 and secure the bridges over the Orne after the summit was taken thus holding the door open for the rest of the 214th Brigade. The 214th Brigade would be supported by the 4th Armored Brigade (The Scots' Greys). The main assault would be supported by the Churchills of the 7th Royal Tank Regiment. The infantry anvil would have as its hammer the guns of four divisions and two Army Groups (Royal Artillery). The initial opposition to the British plan was the 5th Company, 10th Panzer-Regiment supported by four Mk IVs of the 21st Panzer Grenadier Regiment (10th SS Panzer Division) dug in along the east-west road near the summit. The rest of the 10th SS Panzer Division was held in the towns of Esquay, St. Martin and Maltot.Attacker: British (4th Somersets, 129th Brigade, 43rd Wessex Division with 7th Royal Tank Regiment)
Defender: German (SS) (21st SS Panzergrenadier Regiment and 5th Company, 10th SS Panzer Regiment, 10th SS Panzer Division)
