Overview:
The Der Hexenkessle (Witches Cauldron) had been formed. To the Germans it would prove a very hard nut to crack. Fighting on the east side of the perimeter, Kampfgruppe Spindler of the 9th SS Panzer Division made slow progress. Despite four days of ceaseless attacks, it had only been able to clear a few blocks of British occupied Oosterbeek. A stalemate developed; the battle had become one of attrition.Attacker: German (SS) (Elements Kampfgruppe Spindler, 9th SS Panzer Division Hohenstaufen)

2023-02-26 | (A) Ron Garcia | vs | Darryl M. | German (SS) win | Interesting scenario in that it recommends the use of the IIFT and the optional concealment rule outlined in Footnote 18 in the A section of the rule book. My opponent and I had never used either so these were something new for us. More on these later. The scenario itself wasn't bad. Two deluxe boards with either side needing to take/hold more multi-hex buildings than the other providing the Germans don't lose all their tank support. With nine turns on deluxe boards, the Germans can take their time. My strategy was to take 7 of the 13 buildings and then hold. I slowly worked my way forward in the center and the south with a small group to take and hold the north building. The south sector put up some serious resistance, but it finally started to crumble thanks to one of the King Tigers and a FT. The center slowly melted away and I set up a 10-2 HMG/MMG kill stack in the center stone building. With too many broken squads and my men firmly in place - and poised to take one or two extra buildings - my opponent called it on turn 7(of 9). We both were fine with using the IIFT. It was actually refreshing just adding up the total FP and shooting. No more of the, "I'm not using the LMG because it won't effect the shot," nonsense. We won't continue using it, but I wouldn't be against using it again. The optional concealment rule, on the other hand, was too unwieldy. There wasn't any real description about how to go about using it so we played it like a modified night cloaking. We used the Cloaking Display but allowed multiple concealments per hex to save on time. Once a unit lost its concealment, it could never regain the Cloaking Display concealment again (normal concealment was okay). The end result was a slow start because we both had to constantly look at the Cloaking Display to see what was what. It did slow my advance a bit because all I saw was a sea of single concealments. In the end, though, it really added nothing to the enjoyment of playing the scenario, and it slowed it down considerably. I would not use this "rule" again. | ||
