Overview:
Lt. Allen Morgan's 2nd Platoon had orders to hold an important crossroads west of the Moselle River. On September 10th the Germans counterattacked the junction, but were repulsed in a furious fight, falling back to the village of Bar-le-Duc with Lt. Morgan's unit in close pursuit. Morgan's audacity captured the village, but only after suffering heavy casualties. With the prospects of reinforcement slim for at least two days, Morgan could muster only seventy-one men and two tanks -- low on ammunition -- for the defense of the village, and he knew that the Germans would be back.Attacker: German (Fusilier Regiment 312)

2024-10-10 | (D) Andy Goldin | vs | Bob Bendis | German win | ASLOK 2024. I set up a couple of half squads in the forward buildings but primarily built my defense around a squad with a Bazooka behind the stone wall in the Y5 intersection, with my main line of defense east of the R8/GG5 road which divides the town in half. I placed my MMG, 8-1 leader and a squad in the townhouse in V7 with a boresight at V0. My intention was to delay the Germans west of the road for as long as possible and make my final stand in the Z6 building. I discounted the likelihood of any Germans getting by since the building is centrally located and I’d have reinforcements to deal with any ‘leakers’. Bob kept each reinforcement group within a few hexes of the board edge until most of the arrived and then came up my right (northern) flank. I pulled back to my main line, which held only briefly before buckling due to the large amounts of firepower he threw at me. Left with little choice I retreated my right into the woods behind my Redoubt in the Z7 building. Simultaneously Bob pressed his Germans up the center, where my BAZ-toting squad in the intersection held tough thanks in part to Bob’s poor fire attacks and friendly support from my troops in the Z7 building. My left (southern) force in V7/W8 brushed away a couple of halfsquads and my MMG team managed to knock out the halftrack which presented itself nearby with a couple of direct fire hits on the To Kill table. Such victory was short-lived, however as my right (north) was retreating under pressure and my Redoubt in Z7 was also in a close fight. My reinforcements arrived just in time to help me hold on to the woods east of Z7. (Safety tip: have the infantry cross the bridge before the vehicle, since there’s a possibility the M8 may cause the bridge to collapse). My bazooka-toting squad (which I had to retreat back to Y7 as the intersection at Y5 got too hot) fired on the Brumbar which Bob had moved adjacent. My first shot bounced off its thick armor. Getting desperate to stem the tide, I kept the squad in place to fire on it again in the Prep Fire phase, scored a hit, and rolled a “snake eyes” on the TK DR, setting it ablaze. Nice! Even so, pressure from Bob’s Germans forced me into an ever-shrinking perimeter around my Z7 building, until finally on Turn 6 Bob managed to get his infantry to the objective hex, 7AA5. Since there was no way I was going to break out of the noose to take it back with the diminishing forces I had, I conceded. In hindsight it’s clear that the woods in 7Z1/7AA1 are key terrain the defender must hold to prevent access to 7AA5. Bob is a blast to play with and is generous with his beverages. I will seek him out to play at the next ASLOK! | ||
2024-09-23 | (D) Jonathan Plott | vs | Bill Ryder | German win | A solid performance by the German attackers. In spite of some serious infantry losses on Turn 2, the Bosche got their HT on board during Turn 3 and it ran straight through town, surviving a couple of BAZ attacks (darn boxcars!) and wound up sitting on the victory bridgehead hex by mid-game! Three turns later, the Germans had a tight grip on the bridgehead with a leader, LMG, two full squads, a Pz IV and a Stug. At turn six, I rolled for reinforcements and got a 6 when I needed a 5, so I conceded the game at that point. The American reinforcements never got on the board. Great game, Bill! | ||
2024-09-19 | (A) Rich Worden | vs | Jim G. | American win | Very early (during T1 & T2) the Germans lost their first two panzers to critical hits by long range bazooka fire. After that the attackers were left trying to isolate one-by-one, fire upon, and deny retreats to several small groups of US infantry. In the end the US was able to run a couple of its squads back onto Board 10 and deny the Germans a come from behind victory. | ||
2024-07-19 | (D) Mark Thompson | vs | German (Peter Rogneholt) | American win | The Americans had luck on their side with a “1” dr on Turn 2 and the M8 and reinforcements in the Victory hex blocking position shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, the Germans failed to seriously attrit the American’s by mid-game and we decided that a German victory was highly improbable after one BAZ took out the Ht and another was poised to kill the StuG. A very good scenario that might be improved by allowing the Germans some degree of selection over the type of reinforcements entering and/or delaying the American reinforcements until Turn 4 (perhaps on a 4 or less then). With the American firepower largely intact and reinforcements in place by Turn 2, a very tough job for the 7 morale German squads to evict them and/or reach the Victory hex. Nonetheless, definitely worth a play or two! |
