Overview:
The day began with a pre-dawn shower of Russian artillery shells all along the German positions south of Stalingrad. As the barrage lifted, Sgt. Albert Pfluger and his men peered out of their foxholes in time to see three T-34s advancing slowly through a smoke screen. Sgt. Pfluger had had the auspicious foresight to position a 75mm gun on his right flank – squarely in the path of the Russian tanks. As the first tank came into full view, the anti-tank gun roared to life and the skirmish began. . .Attacker: Russian (64th Army)
Defender: German (279th Infantry Division)

2024-02-01 | (D) Jack Wilson | vs | Shaun Andrews | German win | This is one of those small scenarios that depend heavily on a single weapon for the defender to have a chance. In this case, the German 75 ATG is crucial. If it gets knocked out or malf's early, there is really no AT capability left (not counting CC and the Lt. Mtr getting lucky). Since each T-34 is worth 7 VP, and the Russians need 24 VP to win, if all three tanks make it off intact, the game is practically over right there. In our game, my AT survived long enough to get off 3 shots before it malf'd on shot 4. Fortunately, I was able to immobilize one T-34. WIth 14 VP assured the Russians, the Germans had to keep another 10 infantry VP from getting off the board. No small feat considering how paltry the German OB is. (Only one LMG and a Lt. Mtr (which also malf'd on shot #2) and no FL capability due to Ammunition Shortage). Surprisingly, however, the game came down to two last-turn Russian rally attempts to get the last 2 VP needed to win. Alas, for the Russians, the speckled messengers of fate were unkind. | ||

2014-10-08 | (A) Jeff B | vs | David Mareske | German win | A red hot gun made this look like a sure German victory. A critical hit finally knocked it out of the game, switching the momentum to an almost certain Russian win. But the Germans had just enough firepower left to pin down a leader-led stack trying to run off the board, preserving the German win. This one felt like a wild west shootout. |
