Overview:
Colonel Robert Sink and the 506th PIR had orders to seize the main highway bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal and then secure Eindhoven, the southernmost objective of the airborne “carpet” and only ten miles distant from the British armor waiting to surge forward from the Meuse-Escaut Canal bridgehead. With his regiment down in good order along the edge of the Zonsche Woods, Sink sent his 1st Battalion racing to grab the great bridge. There was almost no opposition . . .until the paratroopers reached the northern outskirts of the village of Zon. As they entered the village, fire erupted from a concealed heavy AA piece, one of several in place to protect the vital bridge from Allied bombers.Attacker: American (1st Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment)
Defender: German (Selbstaendige FlaK Batterie (att.) Flieger Division 7)

2024-03-10 | (D) Andy Bagley | vs | Michael Rodgers | German win | Apparently a classic, though I had never played it before. For most of the game I thought I was doing fine, thanks to good placement of my AA guns and some really bad American DRs early on. Despite their loses the Americans pushed forward though, and a couple of good DRs towards the end gave them a chance of victory. Unfortunately we had to curtail the game due to time, at a point where the Germans were probably going to win but it wasn't certain; my opponent very graciously conceded however.
2023-06-10 | (A) Yuqi Xiong | vs | wf | German win | A nice intro scenario for use of ordnance and a bunch of complicated terrains. What American player need to do is to compete with time, and avoid deadly 88 fire. My paratroopers advanced in 3 ways, and were not surprisingly blocked on all 3 fronts lol. I should have made full use of superior FP and obstacles. After figuring out where two 88s were setup, paratroopers must concentrate their force, and move more aggressively.
2023-04-24 | (D) Alex Ashton | vs | Martin Barker | American win | Martin won in the last turn by exited the VP off board. The scenario was a closely fought game but the firepower and leadership of the Americans eventually swung it Martin’s way.

2022-04-08 | (A) Jonathan Plott | vs | Steve Boro | German win (VASL Log) | ASL Recon GotM between Steve B (Germans) and JonP (Americans) playing Zon with the Wind, ASL 188. Guess I should say Steve was playing, I was too busy losing. After two complete turns, I offered my concession as the Germans had just eliminated four 7-4-7 paratrooper squads, and an 8-1 leader during the RTph for FAILURE TO ROUT. If that American force composition sounds familiar, that was the ENTIRE western wing of the GI advancing force. My only defense (pun intended) is this is the second full-rules ASL game I have played. That said, I had a blast learning all the rich detail differences between ASL and SK (Snipers; had a full squad broken by an SA) bypass movement (which I didn't get too much a a chance to use) and concealment (which apparently gets striped from my units every time I think about moving them). I truly had a blast, and Steve was a very patient tutor...and obviously a fantastic tactician! Take a look at the log...it won't take long! |
