Overview:
Hill 27 was a separate rocky elevation, 920 feet high, just east of the Gifu. The leading assault troops of the 2nd Battalion gained the summit of the hill at 0907 without firing a shot. By 1130 hours the entire assault force had reached the summit, the Japanese having been completely surprised. The 2nd Battalion began to organize a defense on Hill 27, but digging in was difficult. Before the preparations could be completed, the Japanese to the north had recovered from their surprise and attacked to recapture the hill.Attacker: Japanese (124th and 228th Infantry Regiments)
Defender: American (2nd Battalion, 132nd Infantry)

2024-01-07 | (A) Vic Lauterbach | vs | JM | American win | Jim and I started this one back in 2018, but never finished it. This time, with VASL, we did. I got the attacking Japanese. Seeing Jim's setup with the middle of the hill open, I resisted being lured into it and the resulting crossfire. I sent a small 'fixing' attack at the U.S. left which withered away under US fire. My main attack moved around and hit the U.S. right. I planned to 'roll up' Jim's positions. My first Banzai swept the G.I.s from their oS5-T5-T6 positions at heavy cost. I moved west and threw a second Banzai at his oJ5-K6-L5-L6-M5 positions. I needed two foxholes plus the mortar position in the oM6 Kunai. I got into four hexes, but too many of my units were HS that broke and routed. In his last turn, Jim killed my wounded 8-0 and 137 in CC to retake M5, sealing his win. The last turn was very tense making this one fun! Jim: Guadalcanal scenarios where the Japanese attack come down to how many KIAs the U.S. player rolls. This time, I got enough and survived two HtH CCs to hang on. I rate this one fun but just above average. | ||
