The U.S. 88th Infantry Division was to take Mount Bracchi in the opening of the offensive to take Rome. The 351st Infantry Regiment was to take the small town of Santa Maria Infante. But to reach it they had to attack over difficult terrain – in the dark. Small knolls known jocularly to the Americans as the Right and Left Tit jutted out on either side of the road to Infante. At 2300 hours, without artillery preparation, Company F stepped off in the darkness for the Left Tit. . .

The Americans prevailed in this (mutual) teaching game to learn the Night rules. Using 7 Cloaking counters as decoys, the American's feinted to the East while the Schwerpunkt moved to the West. Using the speed that Cloaking affords and Searching, the Schwerpunkt accessed the Hill 538 complex relatively unscathed and dispatched 4 squads to speed toward the North exit. Having gained a Level 2 foothold, the American firepower (bolstered by favorable DRs) was too much for the Germans, who conceded on Turn 6. We agreed that among the intricacies of Night Rules, maintaining Cloaking (Scenario Attacker), judicious use of Starshells/IR (both sides), and Set-up (Scenario Defender) are paramount, with Set-up probably being outcome determinative. Even a 10-hex-wide front as presented here must be suffused with "detection/warning" systems to prevent mass infiltration or it can be over very quickly. Great learning/fun.

Despite a good start, my americans could not make it to the upper hills, got stuck in the wires and the mine fields, before the germans in their foxholes opened their deadly fires! Lesson learned : don't use the starshells and IR too early in the game and watch out for the staying rules !
