On May 22, German tanks reached Boulogne and split the Allied armies at the Somme River. The British 1st Armoured Division, in France for less than four days, was ordered to retake three river crossings with the support of lorry-borne Territorials from the Border Regiment. But when Lt. Gavin of the Queen’s Bays topped the last hill before the bridge, smoke from the woods below told his troop that the infantry had arrived before them – and blundered into an ambush. The Dragoons advanced to the rescue.
Attacker: German (Infantarie-Regiment 5 and Aufklärungs-Abteilung 2, Infanterie-Division 2 (mot.))
Defender: British (D Company, 4th Battalion, Border Regiment, "Beauforce" and HQ and 4 Troop, C Squadron, 2nd Dragoon Guards, 1st Armoured Division)
Great scenario with nerve racking tin can action. Fleeing Brits headed for the bridge. Only the ACs and one sqd to get past. All 3 Mk6 broke without kills. Germans closed in behind and sealed off the Brit Infantry wit the last couple squads succumbing to forest fires. TTT2021

I find it odd, having played this twice now with British victories both times, that my feel for it is pro-German. A lot just depends on how the tin cans fare. I got lucky in our game in that his ATR/MG shots were ineffective. He did make what I considered a masterful move by positioning both his ACs to guard the entrance hex for my reinforcing tanks. Both of these fell on their turn of entry. If it wasn't for a lot of luck on my sniper popping both on their journey back to the action (he rolled three twos in one turn) I most likely would not have been able to win. I had eliminated the last of his infantry which could threaten my tanks with anything so it was just a matter of freezing them (or just shooting and breaking them) and running my infantry off the map.

The British went for the village exit, and initially did well but one bad melee and the broken squads getting caught by the repositioning bridge force was too much to come back from.

Fun scenario with the British initial setup the German cannot decide where he needs to more heavily defend. I like the early war stuff where the tanks are more vulnerable. I pushed 2.5 squads the ATR and the 7.0 leader toward the bridge to hold the road and occupy forces and pushed the rest toward the South edge. A narrow win.

German squad holding the fort in the west, and MMG half squad and leader guarding the south both went down on Turn 4. Turn 5 saw the A10 get into position to cover the escape route with smoke, and the Brits managed to get off 11 VP worth with a turn to spare. Lots of replayability with this one.

I set up 4.5 German squads with the 9-1 and MMG near the bridge. The rest were in the stone buildings south of the bridge. Magnus pushed the British south on turn 1 and suffered several squad breaks. On German turn 1, I was able to use my northern force and one AC to make routing difficult for the British. By the end of turn two, more than half the British infantry and one leader were prisoners or eliminated. Magnus conceded.

British run for village exit, are blocked and double back to the bridge crushing the blocking force and trading the Mark VI's for the German ACs. Germans get a position covering the bridge but the smoke tank blocks them and the British exit.

Really interesting scenario with some different toys for the Brits - most of which I managed to break! I pushed strongly for the southern edge and just managed it on the last turn. Definitely worth a play.

Very fun scenario that justifies playing the British -- a crazy smoke mortar tank! Anyway, Andy and I went back and forth trading disasters until I was about to exit my last set of squads on turn 5. He rolls snakes, gets a 1MC. Leader dies, HS dies, Squad is fine. I ultimately exit 8 VPs (including the Rider). Doesn't get closer than that!

One of those games where everyone feels like they're losing from the start to the very end. The British dominated the armour game but I had enough rifles covering the exit zone that I was eventually going to get lucky and stop the infantry. Which I did, with snakes and a couple of British boxcars to sneak out a 1 point win.
Excellent scenario.

We playtested this scenario for Journal #11. I tried to push towards the bridge but the German defense was strong. Then the Germans tried to ambush my reinforcements but I reverted it and destroyed two of his tanks and quickly moved my infantry to move away and escape. Seeing no way to stop my units, Pedro conceded.
