In addition to breaking into the stronghold at Kerrognant, US forces also needed to capture Fort Penfield – an old five-sided fort constructed of thick earthen embankments encase in masonry wall and very typical of the numerous pre-twentieth century forts near Brest. The Fort was tasked to Major Glover Johns’ 1st Battalion, 115th Infantry Regiment. Prior to Johns’ attack, the position was subjected to a deluge the Air Corps’ new jellied gasoline bombs that would become known as napalm. Only the fanatical Fallschirmjager remained in place to defend the fort, and the bombing provided a cleared but devastated moonscape that created better fields of fire for the defenders.

Very special (and interesting for he US player). I don't think the German side has something interesting to do except sit and fire.

Though he didn't choose the smoke capable group, he managed to push me out of the VC building completely and set up for my reinforcements. That looked pretty impossible for me to accomplish, so I conceded this one early.

Played this one PBEM. Jeff elected to go with Group B for the smoke I believe. I placed the shellholes in O5, O7, R7, S7 and W8. The trenches went in a tight group in P7, Q7 & Q8. By the end of turn 2 the germans had withdrawn in good order to the fort with 1 squad retreating slowly to slow the assaulting Americans. With no smoke for the turn 3 attack the Americans conceded. The extra -1 IFT DRM proved crucial in delaying the initial assault.

Second playing. We tried once but forgot half the SSRs and I got completely wiped off board as germans but we decided to try again, paying closer attention to all SSRs and this time, without a ROF-fest from WP mortars, I managed to hold off the americans until my reinforcements got into the building and then the game was german.

We did decide to switch sides as my opponent and I were curious if the outcome would be different with the Americans opting for Group B. The mortar only had one round of WP but it is amazing how one blob of smoke can make the approach much safer. The Americans were threatening the building on Turn 2 already. Thankfully for me my tiny misplaced force was able to survive Turn 1 DF and then, more amazingly, Turn 2 PF. Even still the Americans managed to take one building hex on Turn 2. Turn 3 saw them increase that total to 2 and I finally got the much-needed reinforcements. At this point this already dicey scenario became even more so. All but two LMGs made for the fort, these each went to a corner of the map to possibly lay fire lanes and to make routing difficult. This proved to be invaluable as 2 American squads and an 8-0 were NQd to death in the Turn 4 RtPh. This left the Americans only 2 squads in the building with massive firepower in their faces and 2 DCs to be placed on them so they conceded. This time around it was much more enjoyable, but the "my dice are better than your dice" nature of this scenario makes it a dud in my book.

I made the mistake of thinking more bodies would be worth the trade-off of hard-hitting equipment so I chose Group A. It wasn't, and I got absolutely shredded in the process if trying to storm the fort. I did realize much too late in the game that my initial shot exposed a possibly illegally setup dummy stack in the shellholes, though I think one could make an argument that the setup instructions would allow this. It is a shame the setup instructions were not worded more clearly, but I do think this would not be allowed as it is not explicitly stated that dummies can setup as such. This would've probably put much more weight on shooting rather than moving on my opening turn and materially changed the dynamic of the game. Ah well. My opponent's dice were extremely hot (frequently breaking my fragile Americans on 2 flat shots) so it may not have mattered. I didn't even come close to setting a toe in the building. I do think the Americans need to choose Group B, and I do think that the opening fire turn is extremely important. This one is way too small and dicey for my tastes.

Defended on the wrong side of the fort, the Germans were wiped off the board by heavy American firepower before my reinforcements even arrived. Was left attempting an infantry-only assault through the open against fortified Americans. It was a slaughter.

When bidding, I had forgotten about the -1 against the Americans for the first two turns. Thankfully, I chose the American group B which has mortars. The 81 gave me one, and only one, WP round to provide cover. Craig set up a good side to side defence and used the shell holes to destroy all the buildings in front of the victory building. My troops pushed forward very slowly for the first two turns, because of the -1 SSR and several broke during the advance. On turn 3, however, the 81 MTR scored a CH against the German MMG in the fort that really opened things up for the Americans. Can you say 30 FP with -4 TEM? The 60 MTRs helped from the American left flank and I was able to move substantial numbers of troops into the fort before the German reinforcements came on board. There was still one German squad in the fort, however. Craig used the bocage to keep concealment on his 9-2 fire group, but once it fired, my 81 opened up on it and broke it up. His other troops also suffered from the 60s and my troops in the fort. Once too many were broken, Craig conceded.

US Forces flanked along the side using the wall to cover from the German trench line leading them into the obj building at a fair pace. By turn 3, Americans had full control of the building allowing them to pepper the reinforcements as they made their approach.

First dip into AP11 and a good start - even though I got trounced! I didn't think the defence through properly and Derek managed to flank me and interdict my reinforcements to stop them getting to the fort - His shooting was top notch to compound my misery. I had my moments with two hero's and a battle hardened, heroic 9-2 leader but the US firepower was just too much. One I would definitely play again!
