Overview:

To delay the Soviet onslaught from reaching the main Finnish defense line, the finns engaged in a series of fighting withdrawals. Orders for one such delaying action was directed to 1st Company, Hämmen ratsurykmeniti (Häme cavalry regiment) at the small village of Perkjärvi, with support from the only combat-worthy AFV in the entire Finnish army at the time, a Landsverk 182 armored car commanded by Vilho Savikurki. After a suitbale delay, the Finns began to pull out when Savikurki realized a Soviet force had cut off the cavalry's rearguard platoon from the rest of the force. As Soviet fire poured in from all directions, Savikurki's armored car was able to escort the cavalrymen to safety, sheltering four wounded men inside the cramped quarters of the AFV.

2026-08-15(A) Rich Weiley vs Chad Cummins Russian winHex & Violence 7 - Winter War tournament. Round 1.
2026-03-13(A) Herve Duval vs In progress
2026-02-16(D) Maximiliano Estravis Barcala vs Marty Snow Russian winThe Finns had an easy time navigating the board east to west, up to the last few hexes, where several turns featured close-range back and forth combat. In the same lucky turn, the Russian HMG blazed the armored car and the 9-0 leader battle hardened and became heroic. One Finnish squad managed to exit on the northwest corner, and on the last player turn, one HS and 9-1 leader ran for the win, but couldn't make the MC. Very nice scenario with few troops and important tactical decisions.
2025-12-19(A) Don Berg vs Solo Finnish winNorth board edge, with one flanker up the center. The flanker froze 2 Russian squads on the south side of the road. In the end they were the only good order Russians by turn 4.
2025-03-04(D) Lee Hyde vs Joseph Armold Russian winA fascinating tussle with a lucky early despatch of the Armored Car left a game of Cat & Mouse as the Finns sought a route off board to achieve victory. The Russians got some lucky hits in breaking the Finnish leader late on, and whilst he came back the time lost meant some risky rushes through open ground to make victory a possibility. Fortunately the Russians had some decisive defensive shots to prevent the Finns achieving victory as the clock expired.
2024-09-21(A) Jobbo Fett vs RootinPutin Finnish winThe Finnish supermen were able to evacuate safely despite breaking on an unlucky set of morale checks at the first possible chance. There's something to be said about the poor quality of the Soviets and the Finns that can make or break the enjoyment one has with a scenario like this.

I would have much preferred if the victory condition included not losing the Armored Car (else you raise the EVP required from 5 to 7) to make life a little more dangerous for the attacker. I'd be curious to know how most of the ROAR victories for the Russians happened (an impossible ask) as I really think this one comes down to a few lucky rolls and then forcing surrenders for them.
2024-05-27(D) John Garlic vs Adam Lunney Finnish win
2024-01-06(A) Pascal Boileau vs Alban Bureau Finnish winA small and funny scenario. The Finns won by entering on the Northeast and exiting in the Southwest area of the map in the last turn. The armored car was very useful but the dice were also deadly for the Russians. This combination proved to be fatal for the Russian troops.
2023-11-23(A) Eric Partizan Eric vs O Ramaille Finnish win
2023-11-22(D) O Ramaille vs Eric Partizan Eric Finnish winMy mostly inexperimented Russians tried to stop the escape of a group of Finns supported by a Swedish-made armored car. My initial plan to slow down the Finns in the woods worked quite well. My Russians resisted one or even two rounds of close combat, eroding the enemy forces a bit. My HMG pierced the enemy AFV with the first shot. And my forces managed to channel the enemy and close the accesses. However, the Finns found a way around with just enough VP, under a few inconsequential shots. The Russians repositionned themselves and my HMG guarded the exit. The brave Finns ran through the snow under enemy fire (4FP at -2), passed their 2MC. The HMG fired... and jammed! The last sporadic shots were unsufficient to stop the Finns, who escaped. A victory for the Finns in a suspenseful scenario, with the Russians unexpectedly close to victory. A very dicey and quick scenario, but also fun to play.
2023-08-06(A) Douglas Leslie vs Jeff Howell Finnish win

(VASL Log)
For the re-match against Jeff. I took the Finns. Jeff set up the MMG with his Commissar beside the woods road in W9. The Finnish sniper got hot and took out the Commissar before breaking an conscript squad.. The armoured car broke its MA but used its remaining MGs to interdict Russians trying to cross the road to reinforce the northern half of the board. This is a problem for the Russians in this scenario. They have to defend the area to the south of the road but can have problems getting across the road if the Russians attack to the north. The Finns' morale held firm as they approached the HMG position form different directions and Jeff conceded on turn 4 with only one conscript squad left from his starting OB. I think that the Russians probably need the balance for this one.
2023-07-30(D) Douglas Leslie vs Jeff Howell Finnish winFun scenario that can easily be played in an evening. Jeff and I agreed to run it twice and switch sides for the second game. He took the Finns for the first playing. The Russians had the strange experience of only suffering one broken squad all game (in the first turn) which might sound like a good thing considering that over half of their force comprised conscripts. Unfortunately, they also suffered three outright KIAs when sitting still in woods locations and that kind of lowered the value of the Commissar. On the plus side, the AC broke its BMG and MA in consecutive turns which had a similar effect on its value. The Russians clung on and I smugly thought that I had done enough to win when they strung two SMCs and a conscript squad along the Finnish escape route. Jeff found an ingenious way round this by self deploying a Finnish squad and clearing a 7-0 out of the way with the help of an infantry OVR. One HS survived the fire of the 426 in the recently vacated hex and that proved to be the margin of victory when a 6+3 shot at the end was not enough to break it. Re-match next week to see if the Russians can get onto the scoreboard.

2023-04-08(A) Shane Pask vs Finnish winI had little difficulty achieving a win on turn 6 with 9 exit VP. The commissar holed up in V2 gave me some trouble but in the end I went around as there was no one else left.

2020-04-02(D) rene cote vs Mrosberg Russian win
2019-12-04(A) Raoul Duke vs MB Russian winGave the Soviets the balance this time, due to a heavily pro-Finnish record. This playthrough proved that I can lose as either side. Short. Dicey. Fun if you're into the Winter War and one-off Finnish armored cars.

2018-07-14(D) Raoul Duke vs CB Finnish winAnother small, dicey scenario. I learned the hard way the dangers of letting armor run around in your rear areas.

Also, the Russian ELR 2 *really* hurts. I don't think I've ever used that many disruption markers before.
2018-04-08(D) Peter Palmer vs John Knowles Finnish win[Imported from ROAR]
2018-03-13(A) B-E Karlsson vs Russian Finnish win
2018-01-10(D) Michael Rodgers vs Bruno L'Archeveque Russian winI set up three conscript squads and the Commissar in the southeast area and the HMG was in the stone building near where the two roads join. The LMG team was centre, rear in the wood building, waiting to see where the Finns went. One squad was in the north area to block the path through the woods. Bruno's Finns came in on the northern half of the map. Bruno used the AC mostly for long range fire against the HMG. After a few AC shots, the HMG squad broke, but the HMG was re-manned for the end game. The Finns made good time for two turns, but then slowed down to keep concealment. The Finn leader went down to a casualty MC. One Finnish HS that broke never rallied in two turns of trying. For the last turn, Bruno still had six points of infantry that could exit, but the Russians had the area well covered. The exiting infantry broke under fire to give a Russian win.

2016-04-10(D) Thierry Mathy vs Jérôme Finnish win
2016-04-06(D) Martí Cabré vs Sandro Coriasco Russian winThe Finnish sniper started well killing my leader and breaking a squad, but then my conscripts broke a couple squads and a third one got entangled in CC for two whole turns. When the Finns finally broke from the first line of defense, the Russians had relocated for further delay. The Commissar killed some bad Russian patriots but his job was mostly to help move the HMG around, including burn the AC with the HMG. Finnish fire was not much effective and the Russians were able to slowly retreat until the final row. On the last turn the Finns were down to two squads and the leader, so the three of them must exit to win, but the Russian HMG stopped them. Very fun and fast scenario, played in less than 150 minutes.
2016-03-20(A) Ron Garcia vs Darryl M. Russian win
2016-03-07(A) Dave Mareske vs Mark Fischer Finnish winHMG got off only one ineffective shot and unable to stop the Finnish swarm. Recommend using the Russian balance.
2015-07-29(A) Bill Brodie vs Steven Bond Finnish winI lost my armoured car on turn 2, without it causing any ill effect on the Russians. Still, it's loss did engage the Russian HMG while a manoeuvred around. It was a game of quick rallies on both sides, with the Russian Commisar doing his job well (although a couple of summary executions was required). The Finnish were aided by self rally and an active 9-1 leader.
The game swung back and forth, the Russians slowly pulling back and the Finnish working around their flanks. Game turn 6 saw the Commissar meet his fate with a well time sniper activation, allowing the Finns to run the gauntlet and get 7 exit VP on the last player turn.

A game well worth playing as either side.
