The 3rd Armored was attacking to secure Cologne. Task Force Lovelady was assigned the mission of clearing the northern sector of the city all the way to the Rhine. In the industrial section of the city, the Americans encountered staunch resistance in the form of strong infantry positions supported by Nashorn tank destroyers. Task Force Lovelady included some new M-26 Pershing tanks from the U.S. Army Zebra Mission, which was conducting combat trials of the experimental tank. As the Americans moved further into the suburb of Niehl, the lead elements came under heavy fire.
Had a fairly forward based setup and delayed the Americans on the first couple turns. Unfortunately over the course of the game I took 3 CH from a single Sherman two of which took out the unit manning the HMG at the time. That was too much to stop.

As Nathan noted, one of my Shermans got three (!) critical hits against his infantry. I also rolled several other "2s" on MG and infantry FP shots. I moved cautiously the first three or four turns (much due to his well-conducted, delaying defense), then was able to rush into the VC area stone buildings. Once I got several stacks in there (one with the 9-2 leader), the American firepower took over. Both his JgPz III/IV and his Wirbelwind failed IFT MCs and stunned which ended with both being destroyed on the next player turn. He had a chance at the end when I gacked holding fire to DM a whole stack of his (well done by Nathan drawing the fire from the one stack that could see the his broken units) - and he rallied the leader and two half-squads in that hex. I think this is a fun scenario. Both sides have a good chance to win.

Wirblewind covered main road in front of VC perimeter. Nashorn covered the Wirblewind. Most of the German infantry was in the VC perimeter. Americans used smoke to get across the road and into the buildings, but Germans mostly kept concealment and pulled back. Americans could not progress quickly enough.

Played this one as the attacking American. The German has a mixed force of rather brittle forces and only 2 leaders bolstered by 2x 5-4-8 a Nashorn and a Wirbelwind. The ELR 2 weighs heavily on the Germans. Their task is to have a MMC survive GO in the victory area. This pretty much points out the outlook for the German - grim and probably not the favourite of those players who do not like to be pummeled without having the opportunity to strike back very often. My opponent set up much of his force forward with the aim to slow down my attack in this short 5.5 turn affair. He tried to have me guess about his AFVs by setting up two 5/8" dummies. 2 possible AFVs and one infantry unit were set up on bd49, the rest on bdZ. Only three infantry units likely with HMG and one leader started in the "victory area". I thought, that if he wanted to stop me upfront, I would assign a sizable part of my OoB to prevent his falling back into the "victory" area and to try to round up his few defenders after eventually punching through one side of his forward defence. I used all my vehicles very cautiously to the back with the focus of threatening some of his forward positions, covering streets and supressing the repositioning of his (suspected) AFV, trying to get the best out of each vehicle... Progress was slow and cautious at start but I managed to find out what his 5/8" dummies were, which made manouver for my tanks a lot safer. Furthermore, I could overcome one 8-1, 5-4-8+LMG combination in CC bringing him down to the one suspected leader in the vicotry area. It turned out, that both enemy AFV lurked on bd49 hoping to foil a flanking move that never came. Instead my Pershing tank stared down the road bordering both boards making redeployment difficult for the German AFVs. His Wirbelwind managed to redeploy getting off some shots during his Movement Phases but it could not afford to hang around either for fear of return fire. Turn 4 brought some good progress for the US at long last with the first G.I.s in the victory area or poised to cross the road/bringing serious pressure on his Wirbelwind and the two Shermans with relative freedom of movement. German retreat of any of the up-front infantry units seemed highly improbable. With all WP ammo still available on the US side, the Germans conceded the start of US turn 5 as they found it improbable to withstand the final US push.
