Overview:
After the fall of Rome, the French Expeditionary Corps in Italy (FEC) opened its Italian summer campaign on June 10th along a 25 km front. To carry out its mission of pushing the Germans in front of it north towards Sienna, General Juin set up a “chasing” corps of two infantry divisions, both reinforced with a U.S. armored battalion. Strong German resistance was not felt until June 17th in front of the village of Radicofani. . .Attacker: Free French (3ème Compagnie, 1er Bataillon de Legion Etrangère, 1ère Division de Marche d'Infanterie/2ème Compagnie, 1er Bataillon de Legion Etrangère, 1ère Division de Marche d'Infanterie)

2024-01-20 | (A) Klara Kundzicz | vs | Ripples | Free French win | My oponent gave up because of bad setup, she has setup too much in the back allowing me to take up too much space, which made her feel like she couldnt win. Not much comment from me, maybe wasted some squads :P
2023-10-23 | (A) Justin DiSabatino | vs | Free French win | Free French occupied the O6 position, so the Germans set up occupying the buildings P2 and P8 with a few forward elements near row S to delay the French by covering all the roads. This worked well, the Free French needing two turns just to break past the initial German forces to start attacking the flanks. The German AT gun set up to the rear in order to cover the central and P8 buildings... except it malf'd on Turn 3 and permanently removed on Turn 4. This let a FF squad run up the right flank and take a building to the rear as the FF pushed the Germans out of their buildings for the win.
2023-06-26 | (D) Gerard G | vs | Dimitri | German win | Free french chose to occupy P9 building, not the central one. Germans setup in the central building , with the 75L gun inside, covering one flank. While the 20L AA gun was a little behind covering the other flank. French moved cautiously, and were unable to storm the central hill, the main french force went to seize the P1 building but without smoke, and bad rolls , too many units broke. At the end of french turn 5, it was obvious that the VC could not be reached, and Dimitti conceded.

2022-09-27 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Paul Maulin | Free French win | Epic battle that came down to the final turn. The Germans set up with a rather aggressive forward defense. The French opened up with mostly Prep Fire, breaking 2 German squads on the front line, followed by a cautious advance. The French followed up by scratching their way forward, unable to achieve any meaningful result against the German defenders, but still moving forward. With the French closing in, the Germans withdrew from a forward victory building. Time running out, the French took a couple gambles, did not suffer much loss, but did not make much gain. However, one broken French squad was able to rout forward into a third victory building. On the following French turn, this squad rallied, gaining control of the building. This was followed up by the same squad moving into a fourth victory building on the hill well behind the original start line. The Germans were now forced to take major gambles to rest control from one of the buildings. None of the gamble succeeded and the French were victorious.
2022-07-18 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Jim Liang | Free French win | The French set up the captured MMG in the mulithex building on the center hill. The first Prep from the MMG broke a German MMC on the German left providing a slight crack for the French to exploit. The French made positive progress crossing the initial open ground on the German left and center. However, on the German turn, the AT gun revealed itself and struck at the 9-2 leader and HS with the captured MMG. The HS was eliminated and the leader broken. Once the turn was over, the Germans took the fortified building and armed themselves with the MMG. From this point on the French had to scratch their way forward paying for every hex. After Turn 3, the French went into CC and successfully retook the fortified building and the first building on the German left, but at a cost of time and units. The German AT Gun responded with a devastating attack against a French stack that had just won CC, deflating the French chances for victory. As time began to run out, the French made increasingly desperate moves across open ground. Fortunately, the German defensive fire failed to break a majority of the French attackers who were able to cross another road and position themselves to take another building. The Germans abandoned the AT Gun in order to thwart a potential flanking maneuver into an undefended VC building. This provided a narrow opening for a few attackers to charge across another road and enter into CC again. On the last turn, the French were able to seize two more buildings in CC leaving the Germans with no realistic path to retake any of the lost buildings.

2022-02-28 | (A) Artem Kalinovskii | vs | Gleb Paskevich | Free French win | Very tough french forces with 8 morale drill german defence across left flank. Feels like difficult scenario for germans and very similar feelings with S15 Hammer to the Teeth scenario for americans: need to make difficult decisions straight out placement, cause french forces very strong.
2021-12-14 | (A) Mark Thompson | vs | Marc G (Germans) | Free French win (VASL Log) | The Germans were eventually overwhelmed by Foreign Legionnaires in an incredibly bloody slugfest. The seesaw action saw some wild swings, including the FL destroying the German's 20L AA crew and gun with small arms/Brens (reference Gun Destruction Table), payback by the Germans in the form of a critical hit by the German 75L AT gun on the FL's 6-4-8 and 3-2-8 poised to jump a 4-4-7 in CC in a VC building (among other damage wrought), and final retribution against the AT gun crew via small arms/Bren fire outside the covered arc/gunshield protection. The FL initially made good headway with a flanking move to the West, obtaining control over 3 of 4 required buildings. The 4th building required a mad dash to the central hill VC building or another one to the East. The FL failed in the center but succeeded in the East, DM'ing the German 4-4-7 in this VC building in virtually the last roll of the game. Possibly a Pyrrhic Victory for the FL - too many paid the ultimate sacrifice. Fantastic scenario.
2021-09-08 | (A) Raoul Duke | vs | BS | Free French win | Very pro-French. High morale and excellent leadership are tough to stop.
2021-05-26 | (D) Jim Liang | vs | Steve Boro | German win (VASL Log) | Played with German balance. Free French controlled 2 multi-hex buildings at game end but needed to control 4 or more to win. Afterwards, we agreed that Free French probably spent too many turns Prep Firing instead of Moving. They were good shots, but the Free French either rolled high or the Germans rolled low, resulting in no effect and no ground gained.
2021-05-08 | (A) Dmitry Klyuykov | vs | Fedor Melnikov | Free French win
2020-12-29 | (A) Tony Fermendzin | vs | Dave Cheever | Free French win (VASL Log) | This one looks tough on the Germans as the Free French (FF) have plenty of time and can be quite methodical in their attack. The Germans set up with an up front defense anchored in the west with the AA Gun and in the east with the MMG. The Fee French (FF) place the captured MMG and 9-2 leader on the Hill in the center and focused their attack in the west and center of the map. The FF pushed forward methodically trying to minimize the number of good fire opportunities for the Germans, which paid off as the Germans luck failed them and they were unable to break any FF units until the third turn! The FF broke through in the center on the second turn. An unlucky pin result left the German 9-1 leader stranded on the center hill where he was taken out in CC. Some fortunate shooting by the FF resulted in the German defense collapsing in the west on German turn 3. With no unbroken squads left in the center or west of the map the Germans conceded at the end of turn 3. Note that the Germans were given the balance.
2020-12-24 | (A) Jason Mr. | vs | Mark Dennehy | Free French win | The Free French (FF) shorted themselves on a LMG from the OB and the Germans were awarded a MMG for scenario balance. The FF had taken the castle located in hex O6 overlooking the town to the North. The FF approached the German setup with the bulk of its force to the East in what would be a wrap around attack to take the large building to the East and planned to wrap around to the building in K5 and L4. Not knowing where the German AT and AA were located the FF had to be prepared to adjust the plan throughout the scenario. The 60mm MTR placed a shot into the large building at P2 trying to flesh out if the Germans had placed a gun in that location. Captain de la Hautiere and had Lieutenant Poirel and his three men that captured the German MMG in the castle kept leaving into the support building in P4 trying to draw German squads up the hill in the rain to counter attack in the center if it occurred and complete the wrap around maneuver, in addition Captain de la Hautiere believed that the German AT and AA might be targeting the castle, lastly this allowed coverage on both the Eastern and Western flanks. The FF command got distracted by the loss of the MTR squad early and pulled back to rally the squad for use later in the Eastern push. The FF saw an opening in the Western building on the hill about midway in the scenario and made a rush for that building in P9 after losing the castle to the Germans who did rush up the hill. Shortly after that reinforcements that arrived at the castle jumped into close combat with the German squad that was still tired from the double time up the hill and retook the castle, so that two large buildings to the East and West were now contested, but not in control by turn 3. Surprisingly the building at P9 fell relatively easy to the FF, so they decided to pursue the splinter force in the West in hopes to attack the AT gun and take control of building K9, while the FF force in the center were stunned by the sudden loss of Lieutenant Poirel making a foolish dash off the hill in the open attempting to rally some broken men that had fallen behind in the center. The appearance of the German AA gun to the West caused the push to the West to crumble. Eventually the German Eastern flank weakened so the FF tried to break the remaining force to sneak a lone squad into the building in L4 now that 3 of the four victory buildings were taken. On the FF last ATTACK they did manage to control 4 buildings needed for victory, but it was hanging on the razors edge and only won by sure luck on the final close combat of the game. For the VASL log see the game log attached by Mark Dennehy as the defender who fought well even though luck on my side prevailed.
2020-12-24 | (D) Mark Dennehy | vs | Mr. Jason | Free French win (VASL Log) | Jason (FF) occupied the O6 building to start and started a slow advance along a broad front, probing for a weakness. A few shots by the Germans kept the FF moving cautiously. The FF moved the captured MG out of the O6 building, leaving the German player with an opportunity to counterattack and retake the building in their turn 2, but at the cost of breaking the units guarding the P9 building. The FF retook the building the next turn and was able to get in the P9 building before the Germans could rally. A struggle for building O3 was the focus for a couple of turns as the FF units in the P9 building were stymied by the Germans guns in building K8. The FF finally took building O3 in turn 5 and the remaining German units repositioned to guard L4 and N7. The FF N7 assault failed but one brave FF unit snuck around from the O3 building, evading fire to get into L4. The Germans unfortunately did not have a unit in K5 so this was the 4th building for the FF and so the German had to take the L4 building back. The German jumped the FF unit on the final turn and entered CC but rolled boxcars to give the FF the win.
2020-12-23 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | David Cheever | Free French win (VASL Log) | The French set up it's captured MMG in the center building hoping to focus the thrust through the center hill. The French initial advance was methodical, moving to his stepping off point in the first buildings. The Germans forced the center building entering into CC against the French half squad, but was left in Melee. On Turn 2 the French forces were able to quickly advance to the center, enter the Melee and win CC. Capitalizing on the success in the center, the French pushed on primarily in the center against the German 9-2 and MMC with MMG. By Turn 5, with almost all of his forces either broken on in Melee with little hope of survival, the German player conceeded.
2020-12-15 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Jason Mr. | German win | The French drive suffered immediate losses under German DefF with 2 KIAs. The French advance was steady, but was unable to cause any MC, let alone break any German MMCs.. By Turn 4 the French had advanced on the German Right and Center, broke one gun crew and eliminated the other gun crew. However, the rest of the German force remained intact and unbroken while the French suffered ELRs and CRs. On the last turn the French made a final desperate push across the road capturing the 3rd of 4 victory buildings, but were unable to gain control of the 4th building.
2020-12-15 | (D) Jason Mr. | vs | Craig Renier | German win (VASL Log) | The German Panzergrenadler Regiment 67 was in town Northeast and West of the captured machine gun nest in the castle in the center of town to stop the flanks of the Free French Divisions coming from the South. In addition, setting up an AA and AT gun opposite of the castle in the center for harassment fire. When the campaign opened the German regiment luckily wiped out squads both East and West on the initial advancing front causing the Free French to advance through the center. The German luck continued as the easily broke the Free French flanks continually. The Free French made a late push to the buildings below the castle; however, with the German Eastern flank holding strong the Germans came away with a victory.
2020-12-08 | (A) César Moreno | vs | Chris Anthony | German win
2020-12-08 | (D) Chris Anthony | vs | cesar moreno | German win (VASL Log) | The Free French (FF) started with a even push across the board, but took heavy losses crossing the first road line on both the east and west flanks, while the center was able to fairly quickly link up with the isolated half squad. Unfortunately for the FF, the Germans were very good with their shooting (rolled low all game) and stopped the FF from gathering any momentum. In the end, the FF were able to secure 3 of the required building, but did not have enough men left to push for a fourth building on the west side. The FF attack was well planned, but defeated very good shooting and timely KIA rolls by the Germans. A tense and enjoyable game.
2020-12-04 | (A) Jonathan Plott | vs | Steve Boro | Free French win (VASL Log) | Tactical Tuesday Game of the Month. My second time playing this scenario, first time as the attacker. My opponent and I were hoping to get some experience with artillery, and both sides had some major successes in that. Germans received the scenario balance in the form of an additional MMG. The first two turns had the Free French advancing on a broad front, probing for access into the German perimeter, but the skillful defense prevented the attackers any entry. Turn 2-3 saw two major reverses for the German defense, the first with the Legionnaires pushing a German 467/LMG out of the stone VC building at wO6, but the most dramatic being a critical hit by the French 60mm mortar in Turn 3 on the VC building at wP2, taking out another 467/LMG combo. The loss of the German squad/LMG anchoring their left flank allowed several French squads to push into the German left and attack the VC building at the deep center at wL4. This forced the Boche to reveal their well concealed 20 mm AA piece in wL5, which stalled the attack. The 75L AT gun firing from the orchard at wM4 scored a major success in vaporizing a French 648 and breaking a 458 that had just won a CC battle for the VC building at wO5. Both events slowed the French attack, but good Rally rolls and the Legionnaires numerical superiority allowed the attack to push forward. By Turn 5, the French had secured 4 of the VC buildings needed for victory, and the intense German counter attacks were unable to dislodge them. The issue was in doubt until the very last CCPh of Turn 6, but the French held on for the win. Steve B put up a phenomenal defense, and skillfully executed it, but the French dice were just a bit better on the Rallies, MCs, and most obviously, Critical Hits. Great Game!
2020-10-27 | (D) Tommi Lehtinen | vs | M T | Free French win | Skulking (mandatory for Germans if they want to have a change) and lack of any spectacular dice rolls from the Free French, kept the French advance slow. In the last turn a French squad in the last victory building was broken, so getting a German MMC next to them would have forced them to rout away and causing the control of the building to change and the victory to Germans. Two German squads tried to make it, but both were broken by low FP -2 shots giving the victory to Free French. Very close game.
2020-10-27 | (A) M T | vs | T.L. | Free French win | Slow early advance and some setbacks midgame were enough to slow the Free French significantly, but they still managed to win the day. Tightly contested game, wen't to the last dice roll!
2020-10-10 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Loic Gourdon | Free French win | Great battle with swings both ways.
2020-09-18 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Dave Mareske | German win | Free French made steady progress though most of the game. However, an over cautious Turn 5 did not position the French strong enough to take and hold a 4th building though Turn 6.
2020-09-18 | (D) Dave Mareske | vs | Craig Renier | German win | Free French made a steady advance but lost a building back in the last German turn. A tight game.
2020-09-13 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Bill Burtt | Free French win | The Allies advanced without much trouble. Axis forces attempted to lay down residual fire, but often cowered. The Allied victory was assured by Turn 4.
2020-09-11 | (D) Jonathan Plott | vs | Mick Bedard | German win | A cautious assault by the French and some hot DRs by the Bosche prevented the Legionnaires from from attaining their objectives today. Tight game to the very end, the issue was not decided until the last French CCPh. Great scenario, lots of fun with the guns, and it could have gone either way. Looking forward to the rematch.

2020-04-19 | (D) Kevin Sanders | vs | Derek Dunn | German win | Interesting Scenario - no smoke and rain issues. Ejected the FF from the fort early. Got lucky with rate a couple times and kept pressure enough to halt FF advance. Could have gone either way. fun

2017-07-23 | (A) Seumas Hoskins | vs | Dean | Free French win | Free French equipment kept breaking down with no less than 5 box car rolls by turn one. With the dice so weighted against the Allies, the Germans got overconfident and tried to aggressively push a line against the Free French in the center and ended up outmaneuvered and routed leaving less than a platoon in the reserve lines to guard the victory buildings. Germans conceded by third turn.

2012-10-30 | (A) O Ramaille | vs | German win | The assault did not get well for the Free Frenches under deadly fire. They should have waited a little more and harass the germans with MG fire so far without success. The german guns were posted North of town and surprised some approaching Frenches. Two Free French squads were stuck in melee for 3 full turns. They capture 3 multi-hex buildings but needed one more to win.
