As in Stalingrad, many pockets of Germans had been encircled. At Velikiye Luki, artillery and armor punctured through the German perimeter and as the headquarters was overrun, orders went out to save yourselves if you could. At night, isolated groups of Germans tried to breakout. The weakest part of the Soviet corridor lay to the southwest in the area
of the 129th Rifle Regiment.
Attacker: German (Company 1, Battalion II, Infantry Regiment 277)
First attempt with night scenarios. The Russian setup scattered to let no German escape. The Germans sneaked South of the hills with success holding their fire as much as possible. Most of the Russian units remained under No Move. And only a few Russian units actually saw the enemy. The Russian fire was random and overall starshell attempts and placement did not go well. Straying occurrence was rare. The Germans lost 1.5 squads but succeeded in the escape. A good introductory scenario for learning the night rules.

Once again I managed to lose this one by the skin of my teeth as the defender. Things didn't start well for him when he lost his 10-2 and a squad to a 2KIA. With the other two squads in the stack automatically breaking, he was down to only 8 VP left in GO. Unfortunately for me I only had three squads able to move the entire game. The one leader who could managed to get himself wounded. He was able to limp around the board broken for a bit, before it turned out his wound was of the mortal variety. David deftly avoided contact with all of my other stranded units, and I was eventually down to a sole squad trying to keep on his tails and break just one unit. But, alas, he failed to find a starshell on Turn 8 and the Germans with their leader-led movement were able to get off the board in the end.

Enjoyed this game in SL. Still good with ASL version. Germans escaped by turn 7. Kept forgetting Jitter fire. Cpt Tienham was pinned in town and slaughtered in close combat but everyone else made it fairly unscathed. German sniper active when he was needed to allow the north flank to escape. Russian sniper idle. His single shot did little for the outcome. Russians rolling low initially but this did not slow the Germans by much.

My first experience with snow, night rules and dummy stacks. Great experience. Just a plain ol' good challenge with a good friend. This scenario is a bit like golf. You hit a couple of great shots and think to yourself, "If I could do that a few more times a round I would be great!" In the end, you know you'll never be a pro, but the game has you hooked. As others have said, setup is crucial. I did okay, just lost the last race down the north side of the board. Great fun!

Germans managed to sneak off a half squad to hit 8 VP after the Russian high command miscalculated their quarry. Good, tight game.

Learning night rules. Set up critical. Mine was revoltingly bad. Russians too boisterous.

Setup is SUPER Critical. Germans ran past all Russian defenses without firing a single shot. Russians were too busy consuming large amounts of Stolichnaya. Positive was we learned night rules, straying.

Jonathan Kay and I just finished scenario H (ESCAPE FROM VELIKIYE LUKI). I've done night scenarios before, but this was my first time using VASL with a night scenario; it was WAY COOLER than face-to-face. I had the Russians. Jonathan had two board edge creep groups, but I had planned for that. Two of my four HIPsters caught Germans when they were not expecting it. Half way through the ten turns, it became obvious that the Russian left was receiving the bulk of the German troops. I had a bit of luck when I managed to pin the 10-2 leader, which in turn led the accompanying squad to break. Then the 10-2 self broke to rout with him. He was never Good Order again, and both units eventually became prisoners. A forgetful moment caused me to leave a squad in the line of fire to a seven flat shot; it broke and allowed several German units to get by. After that I was chasing Germans. Jonathan had one stack stray, which slowed him down and kept the game close, but he exited the required VP in his turn nine. He exited two squads, and two -1 leaders.

Great primer for learning the night rules. Very exciting game tonight. Germans managed to exit 5 victory points, but suffered from straying which included the straying of one 4-6-7 and the 9-1 off the board early in the game.

A great scenario for learning the night rules. Russians were able to bottleneck the Germans along the north edge when their leaders were wounded.

Finally got all the rules right, I think. Luke couldn't get a starshell to shave his life, and as a result my Germans calmly walked off the board without firing a single shot. Only a dummy stack bothered to stray. Seems potentially impossible for the Russians, but Luke did have really lousy luck.

Russians threw in the towel after a couple turns because of a weak set-up, though we also forgot to stray on the first turn. So who knows. Recorded for the sake of recording games. I'll manipulate Luke's name so it doesn't count against his record here.

His high value leaders and a couple of squads were able to make it off. The NVR went down almost every turn til it got to 2 which made it tough. I was caught out of position as well. I spread out across the board on defense and I think I should have combined a few squads w/ the best leader to help w/ movement. He chose the board edge that I had some weaker coverage on and I just couldn't get enough guys over to block his flanking move.

Great scenario for learning the mechanics of the Night rules, but it is also just a fun little scenario with a unique situation. Enjoyed it.
