With the Third Reich in its death throes, the Soviet juggernaut began to pick up speed. The German defense line on the Oder had been broken; one town after another fell to the Russian armies as they advanced on Berlin. Hitler was determined not to fight the final battle in the city itself, but rather on the front of the IX Army. Throwing whatever troops were available into the path of the onrushing hordes, the Germans paid a bitter price for every day’s delay. One such instance where heavy fighting occurred was in and around the little town of Muncheberg, where the Germans momentarily mounted a semblance of organized defense.

A fun scenario with lots of big toys. We had to restart once because we messed up where reinforcements came in. The Russians have to wage a careful attack. The Germans set up a delaying force along the forest road which kept most of the Russians busy and delaying them getting to the village. Recommend giving the Russians the balance.

Russian balance used. By the time my reinforcements finally arrived, it was too little, too late.

Used Russian balance which helped with their winning in Turn 7 by delaying German's JgdPz V reinforcements entry until Turn 5.

This time we switched sides, and almost everything that went wrong for me as the attacker in our first two playings went right for the Russians this time around. My Tiger setup comfy and cozy HD on the level 2 hill. The first T34 drives on board, stops, delays to 4MP, and shoots. One dead Tiger later and the German defense was thrown for a loop. A truck goes whizzing along the woods road. AT gun shoots and misses. Truck #2 goes whizzing by. AT gun IFs and breaks. Yet, even with everything possibly going right for them this first turn, the Russians had a never-ending struggle the rest of the game. I guess the key word there is that there actually was a game. Though it was still over by the end of Turn 5 with the Russians not grabbing a single building and almost their entire force decimated.

I take back everything I ever said about the Russians standing a chance in this one. They shouldn't against a proper defense. They have very few good options. They can try for a quick push down the road. The Germans should have this covered with some fairly substantial defense. Even so, there's probably only a 20-25% of them stuffing this badly enough that's it's hopeless. Unfortunately for me I tested those odds. It failed miserably. Another approach is a strong push in the south. I tried that also, and saw my troops trapped with nowhere to go. Much will depend on the success of the German gun and Tiger. In approach one the Tiger shredded my trucks and PR, while the AT gun cleaned up the rest. In approach two the Tiger went on a rate tear, knocking out all three of my heavy tanks. Both of these games were effectively over on Turn 1.

Played at the “Where the Iron Crosses Grow” tournament. As I had played this before I gave Mike the Germans and the balance (an HMG). Despite this the Russians managed to prevail.

The Russians managed the whittle the Germans down after destroying the German armor. The Germans even had the balance (add an HMG to the initial force).

Wow, tough scenario for the Russians. Dan and I knew that going into this game, but the results were still surprising. The German armor ruled the day and eliminated all the Russian Tanks for no loss. The German AT gun would fall to infantry and the Russians would get into several close combats. But the German armor prowled the village and destroyed Russians that penetrated into the village at point blank range. After 6 turns, it was a German victory.

Looking at the card I just did not see the supposedly large advantage the Germans have in this one and, after playing it, I still don't. The Russians have an almost 2:1 advantage in tanks. Granted they will need it, as the Jagdpanthers will take out anything that comes in front of them, but the ISU-122s will strike some of their own fear in the German's heart. Even with the threat of PFs the German infantry is weak, with half their force comprised of conscripts who will soon fall victim to disruption with their crappy ELR of 2. They have all of 1 PSK, and no MGs stronger than LMGs. The Russians on the other hand have 2/3 of their troops elite, with an ELR of 4, 2 MMGs, and decent leadership. The approach I opted for was to move half of my force through the northern Board 5 woods while the rest moved in from the northeast. This would create a pincer effect, allowing them to close ranks quickly through high TEM terrain and use their superior firepower and morale. The early plan worked great, and soon the two northernmost stone buildings were captured, but lack of smoke and having to cross the roads and light TEM of woods into the teeth of the holed up remainders of the German infantry supported by bookended Jagdpanthers would be tough. The key turning point came when a valiant 4-5-8 dispatched one of the Jagdpanthers, and two ISU-22s approached the other from different directions. One went down to the big guns, but the other secured a wreck-inducing side hit. From there it was just a matter of bullying forward, and the Germans just didn't have the stomach for this battle of attrition. A very fun late-war scenario.

My tanks were slaughtered by the Jagdpanthers and infantry could not get a grip on the Germans on stone buildings. It was close for a while, until my last tank died and I lost a key CC. Conceded in turn 7.
